Football: Messi increases goal haul as Barca draw 2-2 with Eibar

EIBAR, SPAIN (REUTERS) - Barcelona captain and La Liga top scorer Lionel Messi rounded off a spectacular season by netting twice in a 2-2 draw away to Eibar in the champions’ final game on Sunday (May 19), taking his tally to a remarkable 36 league goals.
Eibar went ahead in the 20th minute with a strike from Barca’s on-loan midfielder Marc Cucurella which squirmed under keeper Jasper Cillessen but Messi levelled in the 31st after sneaking into the box to meet a pass from Arturo Vidal.
Messi struck again a minute later, racing through the middle unchallenged to latch on to a pass from Ivan Rakitic and calmly chip the outstretched keeper Marko Dmitrovic.
But Eibar’s Pablo de Blasis levelled right before halftime with a superb one-touch strike from long range after the ball fell into his path following a desperate header away from Cillessen, who looked in shaky form ahead of next week’s Copa del Rey final against Valencia.
“When you have nothing at stake you are always less keen in a game, in the end we drew but I think we have ended the season well,” said Barca coach Ernesto Valverde.
“We have been champions for a while now, we were very consistent throughout the campaign. We had a few difficulties early in the season, but we overcame them.” Malcom and Gerard Pique missed second-half chances for the champions while Cucurella spurned an even better opportunity to snatch a winner for Eibar, who have still never managed to beat Barca in the top flight.
Messi had a difficult chance to score again and complete a hat-trick but sent his shot well over the bar.
The Argentine still finished the campaign as La Liga’s top scorer for a third year in a row, the first player to do so since Hugo Sanchez of Real Madrid in 1987.
He also joined the late former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra as the only players in the league’s history to be top scorer six times.
Messi scored 15 goals more than his nearest challengers, Barca team mate Luis Suarez and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema who both netted 21 times.
Barca, who clinched an eighth title in 11 seasons with three games to spare, finished the campaign on 87 points, 11 clear of runners-up Atletico Madrid and 19 ahead of Real Madrid in third.
Their focus now turns to beating Valencia in next week’s Cup final in Seville to complete a second consecutive domestic double.
Their season, however, is still likely to be overshadowed by their Champions League semi-final elimination to Liverpool.

Football: Liverpool now on Man City's level insists Klopp, despite defeat

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp believes his Liverpool side are at last a genuine match for Manchester City despite this week's 2-1 loss to the Premier League champions.
Thursday's defeat (Jan 3) was the first time Liverpool had lost in the league season, but they still remained four points clear at the top of the table from their title rivals.
The Reds beat City three times last term but Liverpool manager Klopp believes his side are a now much-improved outfit.
"From my point of view, we were never on a level with City since I came in," said Klopp.
"We won games against them, especially since Pep, but in these games City were better."
The German added: "We only scored more goals, but the possession was at least 60:40 for them in all the games but we won them. Now, it was 50:50.
"Last year, the Champions League (quarter-final) game at home when we won 3-0 it was a brilliant game but we were under pressure in a lot of moments.

"I don't know if we had more than four shots on target, but we were quite clinical that day.
"This game was different to all the other ones we have played so far. Away to City is the most difficult game you can imagine at the moment.
"Yes we lost 2-1, but no-one would have been surprised if it was a draw and with a little bit of luck we could have won the game," said Klopp, whose side face fellow Premier League club Wolves in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

LONDON (AFP) - New Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers watched on from the stands as the Foxes beat Brighton 2-1, while Newcastle pulled further clear of the relegation battle by defeating Burnley 2-0 on Tuesday (Feb 26).
Rodgers was confirmed as Claude Puel's successor just before kick-off at the King Power after dramatically leaving Celtic despite being on course for a third domestic treble of trophies in Scotland.
The Northern Irishman saw what his new side are capable of as Demarai Gray and Jamie Vardy put the hosts into a 2-0 lead before Davy Propper pulled a goal back to ensure a nervy finish.
However, Brighton's alarming slide towards the bottom three continued as they could not find an equaliser and now have not won in seven league games.
Newcastle are headed in the other direction as once again they were inspired by the performance of record signing Miguel Almiron to end Burnley's eight-game unbeaten Premier League run.
Fabian Schar's stunning long-range effort put Rafa Benitez's men in front before Sean Longstaff scored his first goal for the club to give Newcastle a commanding half-time lead they never looked like surrendering.
Cardiff remain just a point above the relegation zone as Everton inflicted a second heavy home defeat on the Welsh side in five days with a 3-0 win to boost their confidence ahead of Sunday's Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored twice either side of half-time before Dominic Calvert-Lewin rounded off a badly needed win for Marco Silva in stoppage time.
Huddersfield remain rock bottom, but did secure their first win under Jan Siewert thanks to Steve Mounie's 91st minute winner to beat Wolves 1-0.

Football: Ikhsan Fandi scores in third successive match for Raufoss

SINGAPORE - Ikhsan Fandi's rich vein of scoring form continues as the Singapore striker found the net in his third consecutive match for second-tier Norwegian club Raufoss IL in just 11 days.
On Wednesday (May 22), the 20-year-old opened the scoring at third-tier Fram Larvik in the 33rd minute of the second-round Norwegian Football Cup tie.
Capitalising on the uncertainty within the Fram defence, Ikhsan clinically chipped the goalkeeper to give Raufoss the lead.
However, the hosts equalised in the 88th minute and after a goal-less 30 minutes of extra time, Fram emerged 4-3 winners from the penalty shootout after Ikhsan and Anton Henningsson missed the fourth and fifth spot-kicks respectively.
While Ikhsan was upset about the penalty miss, he took comfort in the fact that he completed his first full match for Raufoss and kept up his scoring streak.
He had grabbed his first competitive goal for Raufoss on May 12 with an 89th-minute bicycle-kick winner in the 3-2 victory over Skeid, before scoring his second with a towering header in the 5-2 defeat by Sandnes Ulf four days later.
He told The Straits Times: "This is my first 120-minute game and I'm exhausted. I'm happy to be in such good form because I've been working hard and I will do my best to keep scoring.

"I was shocked with the finish because it wasn't typical of me to finish this way, but I just reacted instinctively when I saw the defenders waiting and staring at the ball after losing possession, and went for the chip.
"For the penalty, I placed my shot to the right but the goalkeeper read me. We are disappointed to lose the match but we just have to focus on helping the team do as well as possible in the league now."
Ikhsan had started and played 45 minutes of the first-round match against Toten, which Raufoss won 5-2 after extra time. He also featured in seven league games this season, all as a substitute, and his two league goals have come from just 127 minutes of action.
He will now focus on recovering from the cup exertions and hope he has done enough to earn a first league start in Sunday's away league match at second-from-bottom Notodden.
Raufoss are currently sixth - and within the four playoff spots behind the top-two automatic promotion slots - in the 16-team league with 13 points from eight games.

Football: Griezmann fires Atletico level with Barcelona

MADRID (AFP) - Atletico Madrid moved level on points with La Liga leaders Barcelona after Antoine Griezmann's second-half penalty was enough to see off Espanyol 1-0 on Saturday (Dec 22).
Griezmann smashed home from the spot 10 minutes after the break to give Diego Simeone's side three points from a hard-fought match with mid-table Espanyol that extends Atletico's unbeaten league run to 14 matches.
"It was important to win regardless of how we did it," said Atletico captain Diego Godin.
"We go into the (two-week) winter break happy with the three points."
They stay second but move alongside Barca on 34 points, although the Catalans will have the chance to re-establish their three-point lead at the top of the league when they host Celta Vigo later on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Griezmann, who missed out on a Ballon d'Or despite winning the Europa League with Atletico last season and the World Cup with France in the summer, is on a fine run of form after having saved his side with a late winner at Real Valladolid last week.
His winner on Saturday was his fourth in three games after bagging a brace last week and scoring in Atletico's 3-0 hammering of Alaves a fortnight ago.
"Antoine is an excellent goalscorer," added Godin.
"He works for the team brilliantly and helps with his his goals."

Football: Klopp 'surprised' that Liverpool have stayed with Man City

Football: Klopp 'surprised' that Liverpool have stayed with Man City

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp admitted his pleasant surprise at how hard Liverpool have pushed Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title, stating that this season is a stepping stone for even better things to come from his side.
Liverpool, chasing their first top-flight title since 1990, have lost just once in the league all season but still trail Pep Guardiola's defending champions by a point with three games remaining.
Klopp, whose side host Huddersfield on Friday, told reporters at his pre-match press conference that he was calm while watching City's 2-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
"It was the result I expected," said the German.
"United tried whatever they can, in the first half especially, they were a bit unlucky in one or two moments but then over the 95 minutes it was clear that they can't stand City at the moment so I was not surprised by the result."
Klopp said he agreed with Guardiola that both teams deserved to win the Premier League but that there could be just one champion.
"One of us, it's like with the Highlander, will be there at the end," said a buoyant Klopp, referring to the famous phrase from the film - "There can be only one".
"But we don't only play for being champions at the end of the season. Yes, it's a main, a big target. This team tries it for the first time and we are obviously pretty close in the moment and we still have a chance to do it. We will see what happens until the end of the season.
"But it's the first time not the last time. That's how it is and only because the club is waiting for a long time, the people are waiting, that doesn't make it more likely.
"That we are that close is already I would say rather surprising because last year we were 25 points behind. That doesn't look like that will happen this year again so that's really, really good." Klopp said winning was not the be all and end all for his team, despite their long title drought.
"We want to play the best football we can play every single day, that's the truth," he said.
"Sometimes we have to accept it didn't happen but we still try it and that's all what we are interested in and at the end of the season you see where you end up."
"If we do it we will do it," he added.
"If we will not do it there are no regrets as long as we give always our best. I saw that the whole season from the boys but still the season, however it ends up, is only the first step in that area. We are not the finished article."

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester United will be without Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard for Monday's FA Cup clash at Chelsea with both sidelined for up to three weeks after picking up injuries during Tuesday's Champions League defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.
The in-form duo will also miss Liverpool's visit to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Feb 24 and face a race against time to make the second leg of the last 16 tie against PSG in the French capital on March 6.
"I think they'll be out for two-to three weeks," United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday (Feb 15).
Martial sustained a groin problem in the early stages of Solskjaer's first defeat in charge, but was able to carry on until half-time before being substituted.
England international Lingard pulled up with a hamstring injury towards the end of the first half.
United sorely missed both players after the break as PSG struck twice in quick succession through Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe to leave Solskjaer's side with a mountain to climb if they are to reach the last eight of the Champions League.

Football: Shaw own goal gives Barca advantage over Man United

Football: Shaw own goal gives Barca advantage over Man United

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Barcelona overcame a punchless Manchester United to take the upper hand in their Champions League quarter-final after Luke Shaw's own goal gave them a 1-0 first-leg victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday (April 10).
Shaw deflected a Luis Suarez header into his own net after 12 minutes, handing the Catalans a vital away goal that will make them clear favourites in the return leg.
After United's comeback against Paris St Germain in the previous round, Barca will take nothing for granted, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team will struggle to repeat the trick against a side with a fearsome home record.
"We played a good team," said Solskjaer.
"We know you have to defend a lot without the ball and you might be tired when you get the chance yourself. We go there with one thing in my mind, we have to score."
Barca have not lost at home for 30 games in the Champions League since 2013 and while United can take credit for staying in the tie, they produced little that will overly worry the Spanish side.
Barcelona's first win at Old Trafford in European competition was relatively comfortable with their keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen not having a single shot to save.
With Paul Pogba failing to impact the game, United were left trying to hit Barca on the break or from set-pieces and too often they lacked the precision to make the most of the few openings that fell their way.
The crucial away goal was well-worked. Sergio Busquets found Lionel Messi with a clever ball into the area and the Argentine carved out space on the left to deliver a lofted cross to former Liverpool striker Suarez at the back post.
The Uruguayan's header deflected off the shoulder of a scrambling Shaw and beat David De Gea to give the visitors the lead and although the linesman initially flagged for offside, the goal was given after a VAR video review.

DE GEA SAVES

United had De Gea to thank for keeping the difference down to a single goal as he saved superbly with his feet to keep out Philippe Coutinho in the 36th minute.
Then the home side had an appeal for a penalty waved away after Scott McTominay, who had a fine game in midfield, went down under a challenge from Gerard Pique.
United's best chance of the first half fell to Diogo Dalot but the Portuguese made a mess of a fine Marcus Rashford ball, heading harmlessly across the goal from close-range.
Solskjaer's team had struggled to get a foothold in the game during the opening 45 minutes, but they were much improved after the break, applying plenty of pressure without creating any clear chances.
Barcelona could have added a second had Suarez not fired into the side-netting from a promising position after a clever through ball from Nelson Semedo and then De Gea did well to foil Jordi Alba's low drive - again with his legs.
The loss was United's fourth in their last five games in all competitions.
"We did as well as we could against Messi, kept our shape well. It could have gone both ways," said Solskjaer.
"I don't think we hit the target and that's a disappointment. We go there with work to be done but chances," he added.
Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde was pleased with the result, especially given the club's previous failure to win at Old Trafford in four earlier meetings in European competition.
"Given the atmosphere and the type of team they are and that this is the Champions League it's very hard to win here, it was a very difficult game and things were complicated for us at a few moments," he said.
"We had spells of dominance they pressured us very high but we created the clearest chances," he added.

MOSCOW (AFP) - Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho embarrassingly slipped after presenting a symbolic face-off to a match in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) on Monday (Feb 4).
Videos of the 56-year-old boss falling on a red carpet on the ice rink in Balashikha appeared on social media after the accident.
Mourinho was invited by KHL side Avangard Omsk in Siberia to take part in promotional work for the club and signed photographs ahead of the match with SKA Saint Petersburg.
The two-time Champions League winner was helped back to his feet by Avangard's former Detroit Red Wings centreman Pavel Datsyuk after the puck drop.
Avangard play their home games in the city just outside Moscow after their usual arena was found to be unsafe for hosting games.
Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by United in December after two-and-a-half years at the helm.

Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lifted the Old Trafford side to fifth place in the Premier League table and is yet to lose as Red Devils boss since taking over from 'The Special One'.

Football: Body found in wreckage of plane carrying soccer player Emiliano Sala, investigators say

LONDON (REUTERS) - Air accident investigators said on Monday (Feb 4) they had found the wreckage of the missing aircraft carrying Premier League soccer player Emiliano Sala on the seabed near Guernsey and that a body was visible inside.
The 28-year-old Argentina-born forward had been en route from Nantes in western France with pilot David Ibbotson to make his debut for Welsh team Cardiff City when the plane is believed to have crashed into the sea on Jan 21.
"The object is wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft," Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch said in a statement.
"Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage.
"The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police."
The wreckage was found on Sunday following a privately-funded underwater search which began after two seat cushions were discovered on the French coast that likely belonged to the aircraft.
The AAIB said it had now concluded it was the missing Piper Malibu aircraft, issuing an underwater image of the crashed plane with part of its registration number - N264DB - clearly visible.

"The image shows the rear left side of the fuselage including part of the aircraft registration," the AAIB said.
"We intend to publish an interim report within one month of the accident occurring."

Football: Vertonghen shines as Tottenham beat Dortmund 3-0

LONDON (REUTERS) - Defender Jan Vertonghen scored once and set up another goal for Son Heung-min as Tottenham Hotspur beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 13) to give them the clear edge following the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie.
The Belgian notched his first goal in the Champions League with a well-timed volley in the 83rd minute after he had set up forward Son for a 47th minute lead. Substitute Fernando Llorente grabbed their third in the 86th.
That was Son's ninth goal against Dortmund in 11 matches, with the South Korean, who played in the Bundesliga from 2010-15, having also scored twice in the competition's group stage last season.
The Bundesliga leaders, who were eliminated from the German Cup last week, were nowhere to be seen in the second half, with speedy teenager Jadon Sancho given no space to operate after the break. The return leg is on March 5.
Before Wednesday, Tottenham, playing without injured captain Harry Kane and Dele Alli, had never won a home match in the knockout stage of the competition and Lucas Moura came close with a fine shot in the seventh minute.
Dortmund, who were themselves missing injured captain Marco Reus and top striker Paco Alcacer, gradually took control and had the better chances in the first half with Christian Pulisic firing onto keeper Hugo Lloris and the Frenchman saving a point-blank header from Dan-Axel Zagadou.
But the hosts changed the course of the game two minutes after the restart, pouncing on a defensive error and with Vertonghen whipping in a cross for Son to tap in.
Dortmund, who had conceded just two goals in the group stage, tried to recover but found no way past the disciplined Tottenham backline.
Vertonghen then timed his run to perfection in the 83rd to kill off the game and Llorente gave them a big advantage for the second leg.

Football: Big win for Hasenhuettl's revived Southampton over Everton

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Southampton earned a crucial 2-1 win over Everton at St Mary's on Saturday (Jan 19) but had to endure a nervy finish as they boosted their battle against Premier League relegation under galvanising new manager Ralph Hasenhuettl.
James Ward-Prowse scored a superb individual goal just after the break before a Lucas Digne own goal looked to have comfortably sealed a deserved win for the Saints in the 64th minute.
Yet a goal at the start of stoppage time from Gylfi Sigurdsson gave the home fans a nervous finish as eight minutes were added on, much to Hasenhuettl's consternation, while Everton pushed for the equaliser.
The win pushed Southampton into 15th place on 22 points, three clear of the relegation zone, as they won only their second home match of the season - both coming under the stewardship of their impressive new Austrian boss.
"We played a fantastic game today, it could be four or five, fantastic football and defence. A great win for us," enthused Hasenhuettl, talking to the BBC.
"The strength you could feel it every second today. The guys really showed they are focused and committed and that is the key for the future."
Southampton merited the win after dominating the first half and twice striking the woodwork - first, as Nathan Redmond hit the post and then as Andre Gomes hit his own side's upright while trying to defend another attack from Danny Ings.
Saints got the reward for their enterprise when Ward-Prowse was given too much freedom to maraud towards the Everton goal and smashed a 50th-minute shot past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The hapless Digne then toe-poked the ball past Pickford while desperately trying to quell an attack from the ever-dangerous Redmond in the 64th minute before Everton's late attacks came to nothing.
Southampton have now taken 13 points in eight games since 51-year-old Hasenhuettl arrived at St Mary's in December - four more than they had managed in their preceding 15 matches.
"When you lose like we lost this afternoon, we are not happy, we didn't perform well and they deserved three points," said Everton manager Marco Silva.
"Southampton are giving everything to get out of the danger zone so it is important we give the same," added the Portuguese, whose side lie 11th in the table.

Relegation clouded by Sala tragedy: Warnock

LONDON • Cardiff City's relegation fate was sealed on Saturday, but manager Neil Warnock felt that losing their Premier League status paled in comparison with the loss felt by the death of Emiliano Sala in January.
The Argentinian striker, who is the club's record signing at £15 million (S$26.9 million), died after his plane crashed in the English Channel, just days before he was set to make his debut against Arsenal.
Warnock, who saw his side go down with a game to go following their 3-2 home defeat by Crystal Palace, claimed the tragedy "puts it into perspective".
He said: "Yes, we've got relegated, but life is far more important. You can't plan for something like that and I didn't think it would affect the players in the way it did.
"I did think he would score 10 or 15 goals, he was the type we needed. It wasn't to be."
It is the third time the 70-year-old has suffered relegation from the top flight, with previous clubs Notts County and Sheffield United dropping a division in 1992 and 2007 respectively.
But Warnock, who has yet to confirm whether he will stay at the Welsh club after their second top-flight relegation in five years, was adamant his latest setback was different, insisting the home fans were proud of what his players had achieved as "they know we've given it our best".

PUTTING FOOTBALL INTO PERSPECTIVE
Yes, we've got relegated, but life is far more important. You can't plan for something like that.
NEIL WARNOCK, Cardiff manager, lamenting Emiliano Sala's death.

He added: "For a while, it looked like the remarkable resilience showed by everyone at the club following the tragedy might bring its own reward when something approaching normality returned.
"But, no matter what spirit the players showed, deficiencies in quality were clear.
"They (the fans) knew when I took over the club was in a mess, it's been reborn - everybody is singing from the same hymn sheet.
The Bluebirds boss also highlighted their 2-1 home loss to Chelsea in March as the turning point, admitting the "result killed us that night in the dressing room".
Referencing the moment defender Cesar Azpilicueta scored an offside equaliser six minutes from time, he said: "It was really low that night. They have kept fighting, so I have no complaints.
"The problems we have had to put up with throughout the season, I have nothing but praise for everybody. It makes such a difference when you hear the crowd."

Unlike their top-four rivals, the Gunners have, on paper, the easiest run-in with none of the top-six sides left to play. However, five of their last eight matches are on the road and Arsenal's away form remains patchy - according to football365.com, they have taken at least six fewer points than the rest of the "Big Six" this term.

Football: Toffees aim to start new year on winning note

LONDON • With two losses and three draws in the Premier League, Goodison Park has not exactly been a fortress this season, much to Jordan Pickford's chagrin.
Everton also have just one win in their last seven league games, but the goalkeeper has demanded they "get that (winning) momentum going", starting with Leicester today.
Urging his teammates to arrest a three-game winless home run, he said on the Everton website: "Leicester is another tough game and it comes less than 70 hours after we finished at Brighton, but our target is to get the three points.
"If we get that result, it will spark a good start to the new year. We did not get the result we wanted to finish off 2018, but that is football and we have another game to turn it around in a short space of time.
"Yes (we have goals in the side) but we couldn't get that one against Brighton (losing 1-0 on Saturday).
"We work hard and we have a lot of depth in our squad and hopefully, those things will help us achieve the win."
Like the Toffees, the Foxes are no model of consistency after crashing back down to earth following their last-minute 1-0 league loss at home to Cardiff at the weekend.
The manner of the loss was bitterly disappointing for the King Power faithful as it had come on the back of two impressive league wins in succession over Chelsea and champions Manchester City.
But Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy told his teammates on the club website to "stay focused" and put that upset to the back of their minds ahead of their trip to Merseyside as they had "a big game against Everton".

Klopp not falling for title talk trap

Klopp not falling for title talk trap

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp refused to get carried away with the growing expectation that Liverpool can win the league title for the first time in 29 years, saying his players must stay focused after they thrashed Arsenal 5-1 on Saturday.
Roberto Firmino's hat-trick - the first by a Liverpool player against the Gunners since Peter Crouch in 2007 - as well as a goal apiece by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ensured Liverpool's front three all scored in the same league game for the first time this season.
The win gave Liverpool a nine-point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur who surprisingly threw away an early lead to lose 3-1 to Wolves at Wembley earlier on Saturday.
Tired of media questions about the title race, Klopp said he was wary of falling into the trap of talking up his team's chances with 18 games of the 38-match campaign remaining, especially with a potentially title-defining clash away at Manchester City on Thursday.
"I would really love that we switch and you all come here and I go there," the Liverpool boss told reporters when asked about their nine-point cushion.
"I'm not the smartest person in the world, but I'm really not an idiot - not always, at least.
"It's absolutely not important how many points you are ahead in December, even at the end of December... If we drop three points, the next headline will be, 'Are they nervous?'."
He insisted knowing the Tottenham result before they kicked off at Anfield made no difference.
"Before the game, we heard because it was on all the screens about the result of Tottenham. Did you think the party started already?" he added.
"I didn't see a smile on any faces in the dressing room. Just see it (the result) and then go on.
"In the moment, it feels like a marathon what we are running. Before the marathon: the weather is brilliant, new trainers, new shirt, new everything.
"The people say, 'You will win today' but first I have to run. The people all around us are buzzing but we have to run. That's what we try (to do) as good as possible."
Liverpool responded brilliantly to conceding only their eighth league goal of the season when Ainsley Maitland-Niles opened the scoring in the 11th minute.
They scored four goals in just over half an hour through Firmino (two), Mane and a Salah penalty before Firmino completed his hat-trick with another spot-kick after the break.
"Mo Salah gave the penalty to Bobby and I almost cried because we all know how much Mo wants to score goals. It was really nice," said Klopp.
Asked to reflect on 2018, which has seen Liverpool finish as Champions League runners-up and now go unbeaten in 20 league matches, Klopp said it was "not too bad".
"The boys have made a big step, but it's important to show it's a positive process. In 2018, I have nothing to moan about," he added.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery admitted that the Gunners endured a tough time at Anfield.
Asked what he thought of the awarding of the two spot-kicks, the Spaniard said: "It wouldn't change the score, Liverpool deservedly won."

Football: Liverpool 'did all we could' in Premier League race, says Jurgen Klopp

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp said his Liverpool team could not have done anything more after they finished just one point behind defending champions Manchester City in their bid to win the Premier League title.
Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday (May 12) thanks to two goals from Sadio Mane but City came from behind to win 4-1 at Brighton to keep their noses in front.
It meant Liverpool ended the season on 97 points, the third-highest tally in Premier League history, but fell agonisingly short of winning their first English top-flight title since 1990.
"People might say we could have done this or that but not really, I don't think (we could have done any more)," Liverpool manager Klopp told Sky Sports.
"City were lucky in moments, we were lucky in moments. It was about staying in the race and believing and that's what we did.
"When your opponent is City, it's difficult. They couldn't get rid of us and we couldn't get rid of them. Being second in the Premier League is not what I wanted but we have to see it as the first step for this team."
This season, however, could yet see Liverpool win European club football's most prestigious trophy if they beat English rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.
And Klopp said: "We have three weeks to prepare for the Champions League final - let's give it a go."

We could have beaten Moldova by more: Deschamps

We could have beaten Moldova by more: Deschamps

CHISINAU • France coach Didier Deschamps believes that his world champions could have inflicted a heavier defeat on Moldova, despite a convincing 4-1 victory to kick off their opening Euro 2020 qualifying campaign on Friday.
Antoine Griezmann scored one and set up another as World Cup winners France easily beat Moldova in Chisinau in the Group H match.
The Atletico Madrid attacker opened the scoring in the 24th minute before crossing for Raphael Varane to double the advantage three minutes later.
Olivier Giroud then equalled David Trezeguet as Les Bleus' third-highest scorer of all time with his 34th international goal nine minutes before the break.
Kylian Mbappe completed the rout with three minutes left, before Vladimir Ambros claimed a late consolation for Moldova.
"We could have scored more," said Deschamps. "But these matches are still complicated.
"My players handled the game the right way. We did not fall into any trap.
"The goal conceded does not take anything from our good game. It was a potentially tricky match but we did what we had to.
"We did not give Moldova time to organise and to get back, and we have to keep it that way."
Left-back Layvin Kurzawa was the only member of the starting line-up without a World Cup medal.
Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman pulled out during the warm-up with a muscle issue and was replaced by Blaise Matuidi.
"We've opened our campaign well and the second game comes around quickly," Deschamps added ahead of facing Iceland at the Stade de France tomorrow. "In three days we have do it again."
Meanwhile, European champions Portugal were held to a 0-0 draw in Lisbon by Ukraine in their opening qualifier as talisman Cristiano Ronaldo returned for the first time since the World Cup.
Ukraine's veteran goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov kept Portugal at bay with several fine saves in the first hour, before the hosts ran out of ideas in the Group B game.
"The team had some good moments and some difficult moments," said Portugal coach Fernando Santos, whose side have a tough match at home to Serbia tomorrow.
"We failed to take three or four chances in the first half.
"Now we have to unwind and think about Serbia.
"It's a bit of a blow to our morale but the players will get over it."
