Football: Defending Asian Cup champs Australia downed by underdogs Jordan

AL AIN (AFP) - Defending champions Australia made their worst ever start to an Asian Cup on Sunday (Jan 6) when they lost 1-0 to Jordan in front of a partisan crowd in Al-Ain.
Graham Arnold's youthful side had expected victory in their Group B opener but they were undone by Anas Bani-Yaseen's powerful first-half header from a corner.
It leaves the injury-hit Aussies with much to ponder ahead of Friday's game against Palestine, when they will need a win to get their title defence on track.
Australia started confidently but their Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan made the first save when he kept out Yousef Rawashdeh at his near post after a mistake by Massimo Luongo.
Shortly afterwards, Australia's former South Sudanese refugee Awer Mabil, in his first competitive international, nearly opened the scoring but his close-range shot was blocked by Amir Shafi.
The youthful Socceroos had more than 70 per cent of first-half possession but rarely threatened, while Jordan were intent on harassing in midfield and seeking chances on the break.
Their goal came from a corner on 26 minutes, when defender Bani-Yaseen escaped Luongo's marking and powered his header into the top corner, prompting jubilation in the strongly pro-Jordan crowd of just under 5,000.
Suddenly Australia were rocking and three minutes later, they were grateful for Ryan's finger-tip save as he pushed Baha Abdelrahman's free kick onto the bar.
In the second half, Arnold brought on Rhyan Grant and then Chris Ikonomidis to find a way through Jordan's defence.
Celtic forward Tom Rogic's stinging shot was kept out by Shafi, before Ikonomidis's attempt at a follow-up was smothered by the defence.
Rogic passed up a golden opportunity for the equaliser on 72 minutes, when he was free in the box but scooped his shot well over from Aziz Behich's cross.
Six minutes later, the lively Mabil smashed one off the upright with Shafi beaten, before Ikonomidis's header was scrambled off the line.
With three minutes to go, Jamie Maclaren had a goal chalked off for offside and. with the last action of the game, Shafi pulled off a superb double save to deny Ikonomidis and Jackson Irvine, capping a desperately disappointing day for the Aussies and a joyful one for the Jordanians.

BRUSSELS (REUTERS) - Captain Eden Hazard scored twice for Belgium to spare the blushes of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and secure a 3-1 victory over Russia in their Euro 2020 Group I qualifier at the King Baudouin Stadium on Thursday (March 21).

Belgium led on 15 minutes when Timothy Castagne's pass fed Tielemans on the edge of the box and as Russia's defensive line opened up, the midfielder fired a low shot past goalkeeper Guilherme Marinato.
But the lead lasted barely a minute as a horror error from Courtois gifted Cheryshev the equaliser.
The keeper dallied in possession following a back-pass and when pressed into action, passed the ball straight to Cheryshev on the edge of the box who finished into an empty net.
Batshuayi came close to restoring the lead when the Hazard brothers led a breakaway from a Russian corner and when the ball fell to the striker in the box, his shot beat Marinato but not defender Georgiy Dzhikiya on the goalline.
Belgium, World Cup semi-finalists last year, scored their second just before the break when Eden Hazard was fouled in the box by Yuri Zhirkov and stepped up to convert the spot-kick and give his side a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Batshuayi should have added a third for the home side when he was left unmarked and turned a low cross on to the post from eight yards out.
Skipper Hazard netted the third when he picked up the loose ball in the box after Batshuayi's shot was blocked and the visitors finished the game with 10 following a late red card for Aleksandr Golovin.
Earlier, Cyprus stormed to the top of the Group I standings with a 5-0 victory over San Marino in Nicosia.

Home's Saswa is first casualty of SPL season

After barely a quarter of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, Home United are the first team to part ways with their head coach as they announced the mutual termination of Saswadimata Dasuki's contract yesterday.
The Protectors said that assistant coach Noh Rahman will take over on an interim basis as the club are in the process of appointing a new head coach.
They added in a media statement: "Home United FC and head coach Saswadimata Dasuki have come to a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect.
"HUFC would like to thank Saswa for his contributions, having joined the club as assistant coach in 2017, and being appointed head coach for the 2019 season.
"During his stint, he brought honours to the club, including the recent Community Shield. We thank him for his work and wish him the best for his future endeavours."
The former Singapore international, 49, declined comment, but it is understood that one of the contributing factors behind the decision is the club's poor results.
Despite being touted as one of the title contenders, Home are languishing in seventh spot in the nine-team SPL, winning just two out of six games as they struggled with injuries and poor form.
In the AFC Cup, they are second in Group H with seven points after four games, one point behind Indonesia's PSM Makassar.
It was in this second-tier Asian competition last year that Saswadimata enjoyed his greatest coaching success when he was assistant to Aidil Sharin as the Protectors emerged as Asean Zonal winners.
Noh Rahman, who was a strength and conditioning coach with the Football Association of Singapore before he joined Home this year, will face his first test on Wednesday against fourth-placed Geylang International.
The 38-year-old former Lion said: "It is never a nice feeling, standing in a position of a colleague whom you have worked with since the start of the season.
"As for my plans and goals, that is to improve the individual performance of the players and the team performance, at least until the new coach comes in.
"It is a big challenge, but we need to approach this positively."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen did not suffer concussion during Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax Amsterdam, the north London club said on Thursday (May 2).
The 32-year-old Belgium international collided with team mate Toby Alderweireld while challenging Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana for the ball.
After speaking to the Spurs medical staff, referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz allowed Vertonghen to return to the pitch but he soon had to be substituted.
"Following a thorough review over the past 48 hours by our medical staff as well as by an independent neurologist with special interest in sport-related concussion today, it has been concluded that Jan Vertonghen did not suffer a concussion," Spurs said in a statement.
"The Belgium defender suffered an injury to his nose due to a challenge during the game which resulted in heavy bleeding.
"He was deemed fit to continue playing after an on-field assessment. All Football Association concussion guidelines were followed."
Vertonghen was withdrawn after the he informed the medical staff the he was struggling to stand up.

The club has been advised that this was "the result of a presyncopal episode, a near faint".
"The specialist has recommended that the player undertakes a brief period of rehabilitation before returning to training," the club added.
Spurs face Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday before they look to overturn a 1-0 deficit at Ajax in the return leg of the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola says Manchester City and Liverpool have raised the bar in what is required to win a Premier League title after a blockbuster campaign by both teams.
If both sides win their remaining three games, Liverpool would finish the campaign on 97 points - the third-highest tally in the Premier League era - and still fail to end their 29-year wait for an English top-flight title because City would have 98.
It is a far cry from the 1996-97 campaign when Manchester United won the championship with just 75 points.
That means, according to Guardiola, that future champions will need to be aiming towards the magical century, which City achieved last season, to be assured of lifting the trophy.
"The standards we created last year at Manchester City, people know that you have to be close to 100," he told reporters on Friday. "Before it was 90.
"This standard was last season, we helped Liverpool to achieve it this year and Liverpool helped us to keep going, so thanks to Liverpool we are competing.
"Liverpool know that to win you have to make a lot of points. That's what we communicate to anyone.
"Next season, Chelsea are getting better, Man United, Tottenham. At the end when you are 25 points above United, 22 points ahead of other ones, if they want to stay there you have to improve the standard. It was easier before, everyone can lose to anyone."

TREBLE CHANCE

The demanding City manager, still in the hunt to win a first-ever domestic treble in English football, is already challenging his players to maintain their standards next season.
And he invoked the names of some legendary stars from other sports to try and give them an example of how they must maintain their status at the top of the Premier League.
"You know when Usain Bolt makes 100m race - that's the standard and the others have to achieve it," he said.
"Like, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, that's the same. One hundred points in a season - if you want to compete you have to do that.
"I'd sign to maintain that level, I'd sign to do what we have done again in the Premier League, I don't expect more.
"To push each other, knowing the others are at the same level. Find out what we can do to win the game, after work harder, respect the opponents, improve on what we've done this season. That's the only way I know."
Guardiola, whose side travel to Burnley on Sunday, also explained his decision to leave England defender John Stones out of his squad entirely for the recent 2-0 victory at Manchester United.
Stones has struggled to maintain a regular place in Guardiola's high-flying team this season.
"It depends on the quality of the players and what I see in the training sessions, if they are happy, a bit more down," he said.
"There are many reasons but it's not the quality because I know them and I know that always they compete good."

The Arsenal manager, who has no issue with Aaron Ramsey reportedly close to leaving for Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season, has been linked with moves for Barcelona's Denis Suarez and Sevilla's Ever Banega.
Speaking ahead of today's trip to West Ham, the Spaniard admitted he would have to wheel and deal in the January transfer window as funds were limited.

ISTANBUL (DPA) - German World Cup winner Mesut Oezil married actress Amine Guelse at a luxury hotel in Istanbul on Friday (June 7) in a celebration that was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The sun was setting when Oezil, 30, and his fiancee Guelse, 26, arrived at the Four Seasons by the Bosporous Strait for their wedding ceremony.
They visited the hotel's terraces along the Bosporous, where the ceremony was held, before walking hand in hand through the lobby, according to a dpa reporter at the scene.
In the early evening, security staff wearing the presidential seal on their clothing appeared on site, and at least three coastguard boats were spotted on the Bosporous. Then, at around 8pm (1am on Saturday, Singapore time), a government convoy parked at a side entrance before Erdogan was seen briefly on the garden terrace.
The Four Seasons by the Bosporous Strait, known for its terraces above the water, separates the European and Asian sides of Turkey's most populous city. Rates at the restored 19th-century Ottoman palace run from â‚¬520 (S$) a night to â‚¬6,000 for the palace suite.
Ahead of the wedding, Oezil asked fans wishing to give gifts to donate to a charity that pays for operations for poor children.

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Holders Manchester City can look forward to defending the League Cup in next month's final at Wembley as Gabriel Jesus struck four goals in a 9-0 thrashing of Burton Albion in their semi-final, first leg on Wednesday (Jan 9).
Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez were also on target against Nigel Clough's League One side as City ensured their visit to the Pirelli Stadium on January 23 is a mere formality.
After also thrashing Rotherham 7-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday with a much-changed side, Pep Guardiola was able to again hand a rest to a number of his key players but named a strong side with De Bruyne continuing his comeback from injury.
And the Belgian set the tone for the evening by heading City into a fifth-minute lead as he timed his run into the box perfectly to head home David Silva's cross.
Clough admitted before the game it would take a "miracle" for Burton to blunt the Premier League champions' might over two legs.
So it proved, but the visitors missed a glorious chance to get straight back on level terms when Marcus Harness blasted over Lucas Akins's cross when completely unmarked inside the penalty box.
It took City until the half hour mark to double their advantage, but a glut of three goals in seven minutes followed to put the tie to bed before the break.
Jesus headed home his first from close range after Bradley Collins had denied Leroy Sane before the Brazilian slotted home Silva's cushioned pass via the inside of the post.
City didn't need any luck, but still got some when Zinchenko's intended cross then looped over Collins to make it 4-0.
Other sides may have slacked off in the second period, but with competitions for places so fierce among Guardiola's side, the hosts were ruthless to match the Catalan's biggest ever win as a coach.
Jesus powered home a header to complete his second hat-trick of the season.
De Bruyne was then replaced by home favourite Foden, who was surprisingly left out the stating XI, just before the hour mark.
It took just four minutes for the 18-year-old to score his third City goal as he profited from the rebound after Collins did well to parry Jesus's first effort.
Jesus did soon have his fourth with a delicate finish from Sane's cross and City's dominance was summed up when right-back Kyle Walker strode forward to fire home his side's eighth of the evening.
Mahrez made it nine seven minutes from time and those City fans still in the Etihad cried for a historic 10th.
But that was the only thing City fell short of on the night with a final meeting against Tottenham or Chelsea on February 24 guaranteed.

LONDON (AFP) - Eden Hazard must deliver more to realise his full potential and help dig Chelsea out of a slump in form, manager Maurizio Sarri said on Wednesday (Jan 23).
Sarri heavily criticised his side's mental strength after they slipped to a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal on Saturday, labelling his players "difficult to motivate".
However, Sarri's tactics are also under the spotlight as he has persisted with playing Hazard in an unfamiliar centre-forward position over the past month.
Chelsea look set to remedy their striker problem with the imminent arrival of Gonzalo Higuain on loan, who scored 38 goals in one season under Sarri at Napoli in 2015/16.
That should see Hazard return to his favoured role on the left side of a front three, and Sarri wants more from the man voted the second best player at last year's World Cup.
"In this moment, he's more an individual player than a leader," said Sarri on Wednesday.
"He is very important for us, of course, because he is a great player. He always can win the match in two minutes. Sometimes in one minute. But, at the moment, he's not a leader."
Hazard's future is also a source of fevered speculation, with the player refusing to extend his current Chelsea deal, which expires in 2020.
In an interview with France Football this week Hazard again raised the possibility he could move to Real Madrid and admitted he has frustrated all of his previous coaches.
"I think he said that coaches told him that he needs to do more," added Sarri.
"I think he has to do more. Because the potential is higher than the performances. He has to respect first of all himself. He has to do more."
And Sarri also acknowledged that Hazard's desire to get on the ball as much as possible has restricted his impact when playing in a central role.
"Eden is at the moment a wonderful player, but an individual player. He is an instinctive player so for him it is difficult to play in only one position.
"He likes very much to go to the ball so for him, I think it is very difficult to play as a striker."
Sarri's public reaction to the defeat at Arsenal has raised questions over his future at Stamford Bridge just six months into his reign in charge.
Chelsea, who are fourth in the Premier League, host Tottenham in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final on Thursday, trailing 1-0 from the first leg.

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Few of the 24 women's World Cup teams arriving in France for next month's tournament will bear the weight of expectation quite like reigning champions the United States.
The three-timeÂ winners will be aiming not only to retain the trophy they won in 2015 but also build on their legacy as soccer's dominant women's team and further cement their role as leaders in the fight for gender equality.
In March, they sued the US Soccer Federation with allegations of gender discrimination with all 28 members of the squad named as plaintiffs in federal court.
But if the pressure on the squad in the build-up to the World Cup is beginning to grate on the players at all, 36-year-old co-captain Carli Lloyd is not showing it.
"Physically, this is the fittest I've ever felt, sharpest I've ever felt," 36-year-old midfielder Lloyd said at a media event on Friday (May 24). "I feel at ease, I feel calm, I feel hungry, I feel motivated and I just feel excited."
Lloyd, along with striker Alex Morgan, 29, and attacking midfielder Megan Rapinoe, 33, are among the veterans critical not only on the pitch but off it, as the U.S. bring new faces to the World Cup stage, said head coach Jill Ellis.
"It falls on those players to share their experiences, make sure there's a push when there needs to be a push and make sure there's an arm around the shoulder when that's needed as well," said Ellis, who oversaw the World Cup triumph four years ago.

The trio of co-captains bring a welcome dose of stability to the team, which failed to medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
"When you look at 2016, we had a lot (of the) players that we have now but those are players that barely had 10 caps on the team up to that point. Now I think (the team) is a little more experienced," said Morgan, who was in the 2011 and 2015 squads.
"I understand that when you look at literal terms yes we're defending champions, but I don't feel like going into this tournament we're looking at defending anything because this is four years we're talking about. There's so many things that can change."
Defender Becky Sauerbrunn, another stalwart at 33, said the current US team was full of younger players, alongside the more experienced squad members, and they would all be looking to make their own history at the tournament in France.
"This team is (a) new identity. It's revamped, it's got a very young, energetic, majority to it," said Sauerbrunn. "It's a new team, we're going to try to create our own legacy."
Much is expected of 21-year-old forward Mallory Pugh, while 26-year-old defender Crystal Dunn has plenty to prove, having been the last player cut from the 2015 World Cup squad.
The Americans are overwhelming favourites to top their World Cup group, having been handed a favourable draw that includes long-term rivals Sweden alongside Chile and Thailand, who the US will play in their first match on June 11.
"All of us are solely focused on the first game against Thailand and, you know, in a major tournament like this, you can't get too far ahead of yourself," said Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the first 16 minutes of the final four years ago.
"It's just kind of weathering the storm. Winning, whether that's pretty, ugly - just finding a way to win."
The World Cup kicks off on June 7 when hosts France face South Korea at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Football: Ex-FAS general secretary Winston Lee withdraws candidacy for AFC exco seat

SINGAPORE - Former Football Association of Singapore (FAS) general secretary Winston Lee withdrew his candidacy for one of nine seats on the executive committee members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), just before the Asian football body's congress in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (April 6).
The FAS said in a statement that Lee, 53, informed them of his decision on Saturday morning.
"With his withdrawal, the three remaining candidates for AFC Exco (Asean zone) will be voted in uncontested," said the FAS in a media statement.
The three are Hamidin Amin (Malaysia), Tran Quoc Tuan (Vietnam) and Chris Nikou (Australia).
Lee, who was a vice-president at the AFC, was embroiled in a Commercial Affairs Department probe that shook the local fraternity ahead of the FAS elections in 2017.
The investigation into a possible misuse of funds was sparked by the revelation of a $500,000 donation made by Tiong Bahru Football Club, through the FAS, to the Asean Football Federation (AFF) for a Football Management System.
A police raid was carried out on four locations - the FAS' Jalan Besar headquarters, and the clubhouses of S-League/Singapore Premier League club Hougang United, "sit-out" S-League club Woodlands Wellington and National Football League club Tiong Bahru FC.

All three clubs were connected to Bill Ng, who was then chairman of both Hougang and Tiong Bahru, and who unsuccessfully challenged Lim Kia Tong for the FAS presidency in 2017.
Lee was one of four people arrested - the others being Ng, his wife Bonnie and former FAS president Zainudin Nordin - but no charges have been brought in relation to the matter.
At Saturday's AFC congress, Sheikh Salman Sheikh Salman Ebrahim al-Khalifa, a member of Bahrain's ruling family, was voted in as president unopposed.
A further five vice-presidents, six FifaÂ Council Members, five female executive committee members and a nine AFC executive committee members were also elected at the congress, which takes place once every four years.
