Military experts to join search for missing plane

Military experts to join search for missing plane
LONDON • British military investigators are to carry out an underwater search for the plane that vanished with the Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala on board after his country's government asked Britain to extend the hunt.
The development came as it emerged that two cushions believed to have come from the missing plane washed up on the coast of France, about 32km from the last known location of the aircraft.
Ministry of Defence salvage experts are to work alongside shipwreck specialists hired privately by Sala's family to search for the plane, which vanished above the Channel Islands on Jan 21 en route from France to Cardiff.
Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has identified a "priority search area" of about four square nautical miles (14 sq km) where it believes the wreckage of the plane may lie. However, the start of this operation has been delayed by poor weather.
The active search for the Cardiff striker Sala and the pilot, David Ibbotson, was halted last Thursday by the Guernsey harbour master, sparking an outcry from Sala's family and a host of Argentinian footballers including Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
On Wednesday evening, the Argentinian embassy in London suggested the search had been ramped up again after its intervention.
Earlier in the day, it emerged that two blue seat cushions believed to be from the plane had washed up on a French beach.
The AAIB said: "On the morning of Monday, Jan 28, we were advised by the Bureau d'Enquetes et d'Analyses, the French safety investigation authority, that part of a seat cushion had been found on a beach near Surtainville on the Cotentin peninsula.
"A second cushion was found in the same area later that day. From a preliminary examination, we have concluded that it is likely that the cushions are from the missing aircraft."
Shipwreck experts hired by Sala's family with the help of hundreds of thousands of pounds of donations have been preparing to launch their own search.
This week, they revealed they were planning to use a remotely operated vehicle to comb an area of about 25 sq nautical miles and they believed there was a good chance of finding the plane.
Both Sala's experts and the AAIB have said they will be able to work together.

Football: Victory and goal for Sala, says Cardiff captain Bamba

LONDON (AFP) – Cardiff City captain Sol Bamba dedicated his goal and a 2-1 victory over Southampton to Emiliano Sala after an emotional match for the Welsh club.
Saturday’s (Feb 9) fixtures were the first round of Premier League games since the player’s death was confirmed earlier this week.
The Argentinian striker’s body was formally identified by an English coroner on Thursday, a day after it was recovered from underwater wreckage in the Channel.
“A lot of things were going through my mind. I knew Emiliano. I know he was looking up there. The victory and the goal is for him,” said Bamba.
The plane carrying Sala from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff, his new club, disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on January 21.
Pilot David Ibbotson remains missing. His family have launched a fundraising campaign to find his remains.
Cardiff had been given permission by the Premier League to wear shirts embroidered with a yellow daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and the team colour of Nantes.

Before Saturday’s kick-off, a minute’s silence in memory of Sala was impeccably observed at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium.
Ivorian defender Bamba gave Cardiff a 69th-minute lead only for Southampton to equalise in stoppage time.
But Kenneth Zohore scored a 93rd-minute winner that took Cardiff out of the relegation zone.

‘BAGS OF HEART’

“It has been a tough couple of weeks,” Bamba told Sky Sports. “We knew we had to give our all today. It wasn’t easy but a performance like this was very pleasing.”
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock was proud of his side’s resilience as he paid his own post-match tribute to Sala.
“Emiliano was a fabulous lad, and it’s appropriate we came down with our black armbands on and put in a performance like that,” he said.
“We could easily have folded, but we were determined. We’re limited, but you can’t question their character and what they’ve got under their shirts because they’ve bags of heart.”
Saturday’s early kick-off, in a scene that will be repeated across English football this weekend, saw players from Fulham and Manchester United also wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for Sala, whose picture was displayed on the giant screen at Craven Cottage.

Football: India coach quits after late heart-break at Asian Cup

SHARJAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (AFP) - India coach Stephen Constantine stepped down Monday (Jan 14) after an injury-time Bahrain penalty floored his side 1-0 and denied the cricket-mad nation a historic spot in the Asian Cup knockout stages.
Meanwhile, hosts United Arab Emirates cemented their place as Group A winners after a 1-1 draw with Thailand in Al Ain that also saw the Thais progress.
India were moments away from reaching the knockout phase for the first time before Jamal Rashid converted a dramatic penalty to shatter their dreams and sneak Bahrain through.
After the defeat, Constantine announced he would step down after completing his second spell in charge.
"Stephen Constantine is stepping down after this game," said the Englishman, speaking in the third person.
"I've been here for four years. My objective from day one was to qualify for the Asian Cup. I've done that and we've broken a few records. I'm exceptionally proud of the players for everything that they've given.
"I think my cycle is finished," added the 56-year-old, who rejoined India for a second spell in 2015.
"I did what I was asked and quite a bit more and it's time for me to move on." India stunned Thailand 4-1 in their opening game - their first Asian Cup win in more than 50 years - but a 2-0 defeat by UAE made for a nervous encounter in Sharjah.
Television showed cut-aways of India's substitutes biting their fingernails throughout the match, while Constantine prowled the touchline in dark suit and sunglasses barking instructions to his players.
India were indebted to centre-back Sandesh Jhingan, who was being compared on Twitter to Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk by the legions of fans watching on TV back home.
The giant, bushy-bearded, defender was immense all game to keep India's clean sheet intact.
But the Blue Tigers survived a scare when substitute Mohamed Jasim Marhoon's header hit the post after 71 minutes.

Clinging on

India were clinging by the end, at one point packing all 11 players on their own goal line to defend an indirect free kick.
Veteran striker Sunil Chhetri, who overtook Lionel Messi in international goals during the win over Thailand, flew out to get the crucial block.
Just as it looked like India would hold on for a famous point, Pronay Halder committed a rash foul and Rashed stepped up to smash the ball down the middle to knock India to the bottom of the Group A and out of the tournament.
"Obviously we are bitterly disappointed," said Constantine. "The boys are sick, as you can imagine. I don't think we deserved it but it's the stark reality.
"It's unlucky we couldn't hold out for another three or four minutes," he added. "But I'm pretty sure no one expected us to qualify for the Asian Cup and the boys have exceeded expectations." UAE finished with five points, one more than Thailand and Bahrain, who go through as one of the best third-placed teams.
"That is the first time in this tournament I have seen my real Bahrain team show up," said Bahrain coach Miroslav Soukup.
"India defended amazingly but I felt that they were thinking maybe a little bit too much about a draw." It looked like being an easy night for the Emirates in Al Ain when striker Ali Mabkhout, top-scorer at the 2015 tournament, netted after just seven minutes.
As the white shirts poured forward, Ismail Al Hammadi's chipped shot came back off the bar and Mabkhout perfectly placed to nod home the rebound.
But four minutes before half-time, "Thai Messi" Chanathip Songkrasin's ball into the box triggered panic, leaving Thitiphan Puangjan with a simple tap-in.
"Today I was expecting a better performance. We controlled the game, scored an early goal but then we conceded a goal and we lost concentration," said UAE coach Alberto Zaccheroni.

Son may not be thrown into the fray

AL-AIN • While the arrival of Son Heung-min has installed South Korea as favourites for the Asian Cup, coach Paulo Bento may be forced to wrap their star in cotton wool as "he has played a lot of games during the last months".
The Tottenham forward arrived in the United Arab Emirates yesterday to join the Taeguk Warriors for the rest of the tournament after an arrangement was struck with the Premier League side for him to be excused for their first two games.
A video posted on the Instagram page of the Asian Football Confederation showed Son signing autographs upon arriving from London.
With South Korea having already reached the last 16, fans may not get a chance to see the 26-year-old in tomorrow's Group C dead rubber against China as the team need to take stock of his fitness levels.
Son, who has eight goals and seven assists in Spurs' last 12 league games, has played nearly 1,000 minutes in 16 games for his club this season, on top of his appearances at last year's World Cup and their title-winning Asian Games run.
Bento told reporters: "Of course, a player with the quality that Son has... can help the team. But we need to wait until the game against China or the knockout phase.
"We will talk and then we are going to take the best decisions for the team."
Despite South Korea labouring to successive 1-0 group-stage wins and failing to turn their domination into goals, the Portuguese hinted he would resist throwing Son into the fray, insisting that South Korea were "not going to change our way of playing".
He said: "What we are going to do is improve our collective game, try to attack better than we have played until now."
While Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has lamented the absence of Son, who could miss up to five games if his country reaches the Cup final on Feb 1, the player is also "very sorry" for being away at a crucial point of their season.
He added: "I miss already in September (due to the Jakarta Games). I feel sorry for my teammates, the fans and the coaching staff. It's difficult. Sometimes, it's a bit sad but it is also important for my country.
"I hope I can keep my form for the national team and when I come back here again as well."
However, South Koreans are hoping he will instead take out his frustrations on their opponents, with Son expected to fire Bento's men to glory and end their Asian Cup hurt. They have finished runners-up four times, the latest at the previous edition in Australia.

MILAN (REUTERS) - Parma forward Gervinho scored twice as his team hit back from 3-1 behind on Saturday (Feb 2) to draw 3-3 at Serie A leaders Juventus who dropped points for only the third time in the league this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo also scored twice, making him Serie A's leading scorer with 17 goals, to put Juve in command but a brilliant flicked goal by Gervinho followed by a stoppage-time equaliser meant the Turin side's lead over Napoli was cut to nine points.
Juventus, chasing an eighth successive Serie A title and still unbeaten, have 60 points from 22 games while Napoli have 51 after their 3-0 win over Sampdoria earlier on Saturday Juve went ahead in the 36th minute when Ronaldo collected Blaise Matuidi's pass in the penalty area and, although slipping, managed to produce a shot which deflected off a defender and beat Luigi Sepe.
Juventus were awarded a penalty for a foul on Martin Caceres at the end of the first half but the referee revoked it after a reviewing it on the pitchside monitor.
Daniele Rugani put Juventus 2-0 ahead in the 62nd minute after a series of ricochets, Antonino Barilla headed one back two minutes later and Ronaldo restored Juve's two-goal lead with a towering header in the 66th minute.
Former Arsenal and Roma forward Gervinho reduced the arrears again by turning in Juraj Kucka's low cross with a clever back-heeled flick at the near post in the 74th minute.
Deep into stoppage time, Juventus failed to clear the ball and Roberto Inglese forced his way to the goal-line and pulled the ball back for Gervinho, who scored with a shot which Mattia Perin got his hand to but could not stop.

Tottenham must focus and deliver: Pochettino

Tottenham must focus and deliver: Pochettino
LONDON • Tottenham may not be enjoying the best of "circumstances" owing to a raft of injuries and a packed fixture schedule, but Mauricio Pochettino has called for one last push from his stretched side.
Spurs' participation in next season's Champions League will be guaranteed for the fourth year running if they emerge with a victory at Bournemouth in their penultimate Premier League game today.
And, while Pochettino will have to travel with a squad that are thin on the ground - Harry Winks, Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Serge Aurier are all injured - the Argentinian wants his players to "focus on our job and deliver".
Ahead of their trip to Dean Court, he said: "The problem now is it's a decisive period for us. It's a key moment. Playing the second leg of the semi-final (against Ajax next Wednesday) and playing (today) against Bournemouth.
"Now it's not to talk too much. Finishing in the top four is our priority, too."
However, he may also have to do without Jan Vertonghen after the Belgium international suffered a clash of heads with teammate Toby Alderweireld in their midweek 1-0 Champions League semi-final first-leg loss to the Dutch outfit.
Although Spurs were relieved after the diagnosis ruled out concussion, which would have placed his appearance in next week's second leg in Amsterdam in jeopardy, "the specialist has recommended that the player undertakes a brief period of rehabilitation before returning to training".

CRUNCH TIME
The problem now is it's a decisive period for us... Now it's not to talk too much. Finishing in the top four is our priority, too.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, on their upcoming matches.

But Pochettino does not want to use their injury list as an excuse, with the 47-year-old aiming to end the term on a high with his first trophy as a manager.
In an interview with Gary Lineker for the BBC's Premier League show, he said while he was "in football because it's my passion, he also wanted to win".
Pochettino added: "We need trophies and we need to fight for big things, to have the opportunity to win the Champions League and Premier League.
"We finished the training ground and built a new stadium, but now we must be focused, all together, on winning titles."

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (REUTERS) - Late goals from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling gave Manchester City a 3-2 win at Schalke 04 in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Wednesday (Feb 20) that put the English side in the driving seat.
Substitute Sane scored against his former club with a sensational free kick in the 86th after Nabil Bentaleb converted two spot kicks in the 38th and 45th minutes to put Schalke ahead.
Sergio Aguero had given City the lead in the 18th and the English champions were left with 10 men in the 68th minute when Nicolas Otamendi was sent off following a second booking.
City, who have conceded at least two goals in six of their seven games in the Champions League knockout stages under Pep Guardiola, will also be without yellow-carded Fernandinho for the return leg in Manchester on March 12.
Argentine Aguero, who netted two hat-tricks in his previous three Premier League games, scored with a simple tap-in after a pass from keeper Ralf Faehrmann was intercepted.
City completely overran the Germans at the start but instead of scoring again, they inexplicably fell back, allowing determined Schalke to come forward.
The Royal Blues were rewarded when a handball earned Otamendi a booking and the hosts a spot kick that Algeria international Bentaleb converted after the use of the video assistant referee (VAR).
Schalke incredibly went ahead seven minutes later after earning another penalty when Fernandinho clumsily brought down Salif Sane.
Bentaleb again stepped up and scored his second goal of the evening despite keeper Ederson getting his hands on the ball.
With coach Guardiola growing increasingly frustrated on the City bench, the visitors tried for an early goal after the break but this time came up against an organised Schalke backline.
To make matters worse for City, Otamendi was sent off with a second booking in the 68th to take any pace left out of City's game before Leroy Sane's missile saved the day for the English side.
Sterling then slipped into the box late in the game to grab victory with a dramatic winner.

Football: Taxi driver charged with attempted murder after Man Utd fan stabbed in Paris

PARIS (AFP) - A taxi driver who allegedly stabbed a Manchester United fan in the chest after the club's midweek Champions League victory over PSG was Saturday (March 9) charged with attempted murder, a judicial source said.
French police had arrested a man suspected of the stabbing on Friday (March 8) and he has now been detained in custody.
According to the Sky Sports television channel, the 44-year-old United fan was travelling in a taxi with friends to the centre of Paris after the game which the English side won 3-1 when the driver objected to their boisterous celebrations.
"The driver pulled over to get them out of his taxi, before pulling out a knife and threatening the female passenger in the group," claimed Sky.
"The victim tried to intervene to protect her, but the driver then turned the knife on him, stabbing him in the chest with what's been described as 'a large blade'."
Manchester United sent their support to the fan.
"We were shocked to hear about the incident with one of our fans who was stabbed while in Paris for the Champions League game," United said in a statement.
"Everyone at the club wishes him well during his recovery."
A French police source confirmed a stabbing incident to AFP after the game but said the victim was believed to not have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Emery won't shift blame to men for Wolves debacle
LONDON • Unai Emery refused to give up on Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes after seeing his men embarrassed by Wolves in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux on Wednesday.
Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota all scored in the first half to condemn the Gunners to a third defeat in four games, severely denting their hopes of a top-four finish with just three games to go.
While the Arsenal manager Emery admitted that his fifth-placed team (66 points) were outplayed, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos netting a consolation, he insisted they would continue to fight for Champions League football next season. They are in a battle with Tottenham (70 points), Chelsea (67) and Manchester United (64) for two spots in Europe's top club competition.
After their seventh away loss, with just a clean sheet this term, he was asked whether he would have harsh words with his players.
He said: "I am usually very critical with myself and I am angry with myself that we didn't do the game plan, (but) not with the players.
"First, it is with me and after that, my style and idea is to look in front and find a solution, not who is the player who is worst.
"The solution for me is... on Sunday at Leicester, (we) get our best performance and the best possibility to take the three points."
Wolves, who are seventh and remain on course for their best finish since their sixth place in 1980, were clinical in their finishing.
But Arsenal's wounds were also to a large extent self-inflicted - no thanks to careless passing, brittle defending and an erratic display of goalkeeping from Bernd Leno, who was culpable for the hosts' second and third goals.
Emery refused to criticise his No. 1, adding: "I don't want to speak individually about the players. We need to recover our confidence."

Emery, Wenger, Kroenke: who to blame for Arsenal's sh*tshow

Unai Emery says he was happy with how Arsenal were implementing his game plan before the red card which saw Ainsley Maitland-Niles dismissed and reduced the Gunners to 10 men. The Spaniard explained that the idea was to control the match with good defensive positioning, but by the time the right back was sent off, Leicester had had 8 attempts

Emery still has made a big mistake from the start and she should be blame for his lineup though. You cannot start Mustafi, Mavropanos, Jenkinson, Elneny, Guendouzi, at the same time, and NOT expect repercussions. I understand the need for rotation, but that was too many changes, and such a lack of quality coming in.
Emery: We started very well but the red card changed

There is one massive reason Arsenal got thrashed last night in the Europa League final against Chelsea and that is the manager Unai Emery. Now, I will say straight up I am not calling for him to be sacked or anything like that and I do believe that he needs at least one more season to try and build the team in his image but neither will I make any more excuses for him.

Football: Arsenal bounce back to rout feeble Fulham 4-1

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal responded to their thrashing by Liverpool in the best possible manner reeling off a routine 4-1 humbling of struggling Fulham in their Premier League clash on Tuesday (Jan 1).
Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka had set Arsenal on their way with his fourth goal of the season. Alexandre Lacazette added the second after 55 minutes with their momentum temporarily halted as Aboubakar Kamara pulled one back after 69 minutes.
However, Welshman Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to make it 3-1 eleven minutes from time and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added a fourth.
Arsenal have yet to keep a clean sheet since beating Huddersfield Town on December 8, but a second win in six matches saw them move on to 41 points two points off the Champions League places.
Fulham have shown little sign of a recovery under Claudio Ranieri since he took over from the sacked Slavisa Jokanovic and are second from bottom.
The visitors did have their chances early on to break the deadlock.
First Fulham captain Tom Cairney sent Ryan Sessegnon clear of defenders with the simplest of passes only for the England under-21 star to sidefoot his shot wide of Bernd Leno's goal.
Then Andre Schurrle hit a dangerous low cross from the left and Sessegnon ran in behind Sead Kolasinac only to miskick with the goal at his mercy.
Fulham paid dearly for that miss in the 25th minute as Arsenal exposed the defensive frailties that have blighted their season.
Alex Iwobi spotted Xhaka advancing unmarked into the penalty area and flighted the ball into his path.
The midfielder had all the time he needed to control the ball and poke it past Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico.
Arsenal relaxed and created a series of chances, Xhaka and Sokratis having shots blocked, Aubameyang heading wide and Lacazette seeing a shot hit Rico's trailing leg.
A second goal arrived ten minutes into the second half.
It was Arsenal at their intricate, quick-passing best.
Iwobi, on the left, touched the ball forward to Aubameyang, who saw Kolasinac advancing inside him and rolled it into his path. The defender unselfishly squared for Lacazette to hit the ball past Rico from ten yards.
Kamara briefly gave Fulham hope when he made amends for Saturday's controversial penalty miss at home to Huddersfield - he had insisted on taking the spot kick himself - by arriving at the far post to convert Sessegnon's low cross.
The Gunners, though, put the game to bed 11 minutes from time.
Matteo Guendouzi and Kolasinac opened Fulham up down the left, Aubameyang smacked Kolasinac's low cross against the post and the rebound fell to Ramsey, who shot high past Rico's left hand.
Aubameyang made it 4-1 after 83 minutes when Fulham failed dismally to clear a corner and the Gabon striker's shot was deflected over Rico by Tim Ream's attempt to block.

Klopp sees no need to panic

LONDON • Liverpool have lost their two games this year but manager Jurgen Klopp believes there is no reason to panic, with his side still four points ahead at the top of the Premier League.
The Reds lost 2-1 to second-placed Manchester City, who are on 50 points, before they lost to Wolves by the same scoreline on Monday in the FA Cup third round.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of today's league trip to Brighton, Klopp said: "So far our season has been really good and now we need to carry on.
"Two weeks ago everyone was so excited about the distance between (us and City). Now we have lost two games, not nice but not a real problem."
Criticism of his decision to make nine changes for Wolves is still fresh in his ears, as the Reds have now been eliminated from both domestic Cup competitions at the first hurdle. But that will be a small price to pay should they land a first league title since 1990.
When asked if there is an advantage now that they can fully focus on the league, Klopp said: "It's my preferred rhythm (having just one domestic game a week).
"It's our situation, it's not that we decided to go out of the Cups. We had to make changes (and play second-string players) because of the intensity of the games."

He called Brighton a good team, adding: "(Lewis) Dunk and (Shane) Duffy are outstanding centre-halves. (Davy) Propper is playing his best season in England and is a good pairing with (Dale) Stephens."
After that, they have another three very winnable home games against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth plus a trip to West Ham before facing Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Those five games provide them with a perfect platform to at least consolidate their lead, after the disappointment of losing their unbeaten league record to City to give the champions a foothold back in the title race.
Klopp will recall most of his key players who skipped FA Cup duty, but an injury to Dejan Lovren leaves him short of options at centre-back with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip also sidelined. Fabinho may have to deputise in defence once more alongside the calming presence of Virgil van Dijk.
Brighton, with 26 points, are well-placed to achieve their principal target of avoiding relegation with a 10-point cushion above the drop zone, thanks in large part to a strong home record.
Only Tottenham and Chelsea have been victorious in 10 league games at the Amex Stadium. But Brighton manager Chris Hughton knows he has a tough task.
"I think he (Klopp) has been outstanding. This season shows what a great job he's done. Liverpool are better prepared and it's all led by him," he said.

Football: Former great Ryan Giggs backs Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as permanent Manchester United manager

(REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given Manchester United momentum thanks to his tactical acumen and past links to the club, and it should give him the manager's job on a permanent basis, the English Premier League team's former great Ryan Giggs has said.
Wales manager Giggs, who was Solskjaer's teammate at Old Trafford for 11 seasons, thought that the Norwegian caretaker boss had done enough to be handed the reins next season.
"We've messed around far too long," he told The Guardian.
"When you've got someone who knows the club, who is tactically astute, clearly has the players and fans on board, that gives you lots of momentum.
"There will be bumps in the road but most fans imagine what he could do with the money that's been spent the last few years.
"He studied the game while he had a bad injury and then he coached (the reserves) at the club. So I always thought he had that potential because he knows the game and has that inner steel."
Solskjaer's credentials will be tested when United travel to Chelsea later on Monday (Feb 18) for a fifth-round FA Cup clash before they host Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
United have won 10 games and only drawn one and lost one in all competitions since he took charge.

LONDON • Michail Antonio has been a familiar foe for Tottenham.
Back in the 2015-16 season, when Spurs were pushing for the Premier League title, it was Antonio who derailed them with the only goal of a 1-0 West Ham win at Upton Park.
Yesterday, the forward struck the first goal by a visiting player to Spurs' new stadium and it was one that stood to damage their hopes of a top-four finish.
Antonio's reward was no more than what West Ham deserved and the 1-0 win served to end the side's woeful recent away run - they had arrived on the back of one point from an available 24.
Spurs could have been forgiven for having one eye on Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first-leg against Ajax but it was alarming to see how flat and laboured they were in the second half.
They looked out on their feet in the closing stages, when West Ham could easily have added to their 67th-minute lead, and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted afterwards that his team were suffering from fatigue.
"We were tired. We knew that it was going to be tough because it was a derby," he said.

"We knew that to compete in the Premier League top four is very tough. First half we deserved it, second half they deserved it.
"Second half they were better. They had more energy than us and we conceded a lot of space for them to run into. We didn't find a way to manage the ball properly.
"But the effort my players are doing is amazing. I still feel proud of them. Sometimes we need to admit it's tough, we didn't score and now we have to move on."
Spurs had won all four matches at their new £1 billion (S$1.76 billion) stadium, and have yet to concede a goal before yesterday. But it was finally the day when their perfect record ended.
More significantly, the loss put a dent in their Champions League qualification hopes.
Tottenham now hold a slim three-point lead over fourth-placed Chelsea (67) and are four points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal, with both teams in action today.
Manchester United, further back in sixth and six points behind Spurs, host Chelsea as all three teams know they must now take advantage of Spurs' slip.
Pochettino had insisted Tottenham's first European semi-final since the 1984 Uefa Cup was less significant than their top-four challenge. But his team selection told a different story.
The Argentinian rested Kieran Trippier, Victor Wanyama and Fernando Llorente, but his gamble backfired.
Spurs dominated the first half and could have been ahead had Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen converted their chances.
They were then made to pay as West Ham took the lead after half-time when Antonio lashed past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris following a cross from Marko Arnautovic.
"For us to come here and get the first win is a great achievement," said a beaming Antonio, who did not know that he was the first away player to score at the new stadium.
"I wasn't aware but that's another little mark in history, and I love it."

Football: Liverpool fans in Madrid and Singapore celebrate Reds' Champions League win over Tottenham

Football: Liverpool fans in Madrid and Singapore celebrate Reds' Champions League win over Tottenham

SINGAPORE - They had already spent about $2,000 each for flights and accommodation, and were planning to try their luck with scalpers for the Champions League final tickets in Madrid.
Dinesh Kumar, a 34-year-old Liverpool fan, and his 62-year-old Tottenham-supporting father Dewadas Vellasamy, were willing to pay about $6,000 each but were quoted almost $10,000 each and decided to pass.
Yet the duo, who were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans who had made their way to the Spanish capital last week, still had the time of their lives on Saturday (June 1) with the football festivities that unfolded outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to lift their sixth European Cup.
Dinesh, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The Straits Times: "It was hot and humid and we were surprised the Liverpool fan zone at Plaza Felipe II had no live screening. We were directed to bars, but they were fully booked and the commentary was in Spanish.
"In the end, we found an Indian bistro which was willing to let us to make a booking and watch the game. Fans from Hong Kong, Australia, Egypt, Malaysia, India and England started streaming in.
"There were so many fans like us who did not have tickets, but we ended up having a crazy party.
"At the final whistle, we were in tears because some of us went to Kiev last year when Liverpool lost and this felt like consolation.

"We went to the fan zone again where people gathered and celebrated with song and dance until 6am."
Dewadas, a retiree who has supported Tottenham since 1974, added: "Naturally, we Spurs fans are quite disappointed. I feel Liverpool won by luck because of the penalty and Alisson's saves.
"But I'm also very happy to be part of history with Tottenham's first Champions League final and witness in person what fans are willing to do for the love of their clubs."
Aaron Kok, a Liverpool fan who runs The Experiences Firm that took 11 fans to Madrid, was impressed by the respect both sets of fans showed despite the intense rivalry.
The 42-year-old said: "Spurs fans deserve huge credit. Visibly fewer in numbers, they were still great sport and created insane noise and atmosphere. They were respectful with friendly banter which should be how all sports fans should behave regardless of the team we support."
He and two other Liverpool fans left their hotel at 4am on Sunday to begin a 12-hour commute by plane and car to Merseyside via Rome and London for the trophy parade.
Kok said: "This trip to Liverpool is really quite illogical as there was no guarantee of victory and we could have gone to a very sad city. But life has to be lived through the heart as much as the brain."
Meanwhile, fans in Singapore had various options to follow Saturday's action, including at the Osim Sundown Marathon, where around 300 people gathered to watch the live telecast on a big screen at the runners' village.
After completing the half-marathon in a black Liverpool kit, Eddy Chua, a 22-year-old national serviceman, said: "There was a very lively atmosphere. Even though we were all tired after the run, we kept the atmosphere going.
"I was there alone, but it felt like I was there with friends as we were in it together, cheering for our team when Liverpool scored.
"I supported Liverpool only since 2006 and, from that time on, our only major trophy was the League Cup in 2012. But the Champions League win was our moment to tell the world that this is our time."
Tottenham fan Raama Subramaniyam, a 42-year-old who was also clad in his Spurs jersey, added: "I like the set-up of the live screening, it was well organised and the sound system was good. I just wish I had more friends and Spurs fans around me.
"It was quite a boring game, to be honest. The three-week break after the last Premier League game caused both teams' form to drop and they were both so cautious.
"Spurs attacked in the second half, but didn't convert (their chances), so hard luck to them and congratulations to Liverpool."
