PORTO (REUTERS) - Porto converted a penalty awarded following a VAR review three minutes from the end of extra time to beat AS Roma 3-1 and reach the Champions League quarter-finals after an epic finale on Wednesday (March 6).
Fernando went down as he tried to meet Maxi Pereiraâ€™s low shot across the face of the goal and, after studying the pitchside monitor, the referee judged that his shirt had been tugged by Alessandro Florenzi.
Alex Telles emphatically converted the spot-kick to give Porto a 4-3 aggregate win in the round of 16 tie and heap further pressure on Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco, who Italian media said before the match was fighting to keep his job.
Shortly afterwards, Roma also thought they had won a penalty when the referee stopped the game while the video assistant looked for a possible push by Moussa Marega on Patrik Schick but play was waved on, this time without a pitchside review.
â€œThe VAR is there and he didnâ€™t even go and look at it,â€ said Roma defender Kostas Manolas. â€œFor me, itâ€™s a disgrace â€“ the contact was clear. I donâ€™t understand why these things always happen to us.â€ Italian media said Di Francesco would not speak to the media and had â€œisolated himselfâ€ on the team bus.
Porto defender Pepe will miss the quarter-final first leg through suspension after being booked following a clash with Edin Dzeko. The pair pressed their foreheads against each other and the Roma forward than fell over backwards.
Dzeko was also yellow-carded for the farcical incident.
Porto quickly took control and it was no surprise when they went ahead in the 26th minute.
Marega won possession, exchanged passes with Jesus Corona and slipped the ball inside for Tiquinho Soares, a Brazilian journeyman playing at his 14th professional club, to turn in from point-blank range.
Roma, however, equalised from out of the blue, helped by a schoolboy error from Eder Militao who stuck out a leg as Diego Perotti cut inside him and held his head in despair as the referee pointed to the spot.
Daniele De Rossi produced a stuttering run-up and nonchalantly sent Iker Casillas the wrong way for his first goal of the season.
Yet, after De Rossi went off injured, Porto regained control and were back in front seven minutes after the break.
Corona crossed from the left and Marega easily got away from his marker and side-footed the ball into the roof of the net from two metres to level the aggregate score at 3-3.
Roma wasted a glorious chance before the end of normal time when Pepe sent the ball straight to Perotti, but he shot high and wide from inside the penalty area.
Dzeko also missed two chances shortly before Portoâ€™s penalty, leaving the Serie A side with only themselves to blame.
â€œWeâ€™ve got to accept it, even if the way it happened is terrible to take,â€ said De Rossi. â€œWe didnâ€™t deserve to go out.â€

Keiji Shigetomi knows the magnitude of his task in his first senior appointment as head coach of reigning Singapore Premier League (SPL) champions Albirex Niigata.
After three seasons of sweeping all competitive silverware, anything less than complete dominance this term might be considered a failure.
But the White Swans coach is unfazed.
"Of course, I'm excited for the upcoming season," Shigetomi told The Straits Times. "I'm a little bit nervous too, because last year we were champions for everything.
"But I'm enjoying myself and I'm having fun. I feel fantastic."
He is not one to shy away from challenges. He had no qualms speaking to ST without a translator - which was not often practised by his predecessors - even if he admits his command of English is "not so great".

Just one match into the new season, he is already feeling the heat.
Shigetomi's introduction to Singapore football ended in defeat as Albirex failed in their bid to lift a fourth successive Community Shield - a non-competitive trophy - after losing on penalties to Home United last Saturday.
The loss has raised questions whether the new-look squad, with only four players retained from last season, can match up to their predecessors.
One of them is attacking midfielder Hiroyoshi Kamata, who said: "We could not win the Community Shield, but we are still aiming for success in the SPL and Singapore Cup.
"It has been said that we are weaker this year than last year, but I think this target can certainly be realised."
Skipper Kyoga Nakamura, a new arrival who represented Japan at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup, added: "Now that we have played our first official game, we understand our places in the team better. We are working seriously to correct and modify what we have to."
Shigetomi, who arrived in Singapore in 2014 to lead Albirex's soccer school and stepped up to assistant coach for the SPL team last season, is keen to continue with the slick football of predecessor Kazuaki Yoshinaga's team.
The new man in the hot seat, however, realises that this is not a straightforward task.
Other than having to integrate a new-look side, Shigetomi also has to contend with new SPL rules which require Albirex to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two playing the entire first half.
The club missed out on several targets in the close season, but still managed to sign six local players.
"Six local players joined, but three are students, so they can join our (usual) morning training sessions only one or two times every week. So it is a bit of headache for me," said Shigetomi, with a wry smile.
The difference in culture will also take time to bridge.
The coach cited how his local players would arrive less than 30 minutes before training sessions.
In contrast, the Japanese players would report for training more than 90 minutes earlier to do proper stretching.
"But I have seen improvement and these days it is OK," said the 39-year-old.
The former head coach of the Sanfreece Hiroshima Soccer School in Japan is optimistic his side will gel and grow as the season progresses and can challenge on all fronts.
"Yes, it is so difficult to do," he said. "We need to have more quality in our passing and our defending.
"But I think over time, the players will understand each other more and we will get better.
"So our target is still to win all (the competitive) trophies."

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham's ability to remain focused amid numerous distractions has propelled his side into second place in the Premier League.
A 5-0 Wembley demolition of Bournemouth on Wednesday featured two goals from Son Heung-Min and one each from Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane and Lucas Moura.
The ruthless massacre allowed Tottenham to capitalise on Manchester City's loss at Leicester and move above the champions.
Tottenham began the campaign by setting an unusual record: they became the first Premier League side to fail to sign a single new player in a summer transfer window.
Other off-field problems have beset the north London club, not least delays to the opening of the new 62,000-seat stadium at White Hart Lane which forced them to continue using Wembley as a temporary home for far longer than initially planned.
But despite that Tottenham have continued to prosper on the pitch under Pochettino, who is regarded as Manchester United's preferred choice to become their new permanent manager at the end of the season.
The Bournemouth win followed a 6-2 success at Everton on Sunday, keeping morale high heading into 2019, when Tottenham will also compete in the Champions League knockout stages.
"Over the last six months, we haven't complained about anything," Pochettino said.
"The one thing we have kept is the belief and being positive and we have created a bubble.
"We are in this position because we have worked a lot and the players really believe."
Liverpool's win at home to Newcastle means they are now six points clear and favourites to win the Premier League for the first time.
TITLE CONTENDERS
Tottenham haven't won the title since the early 1960s and last won a trophy in 2008, but they are firmly in the title hunt.
They didn't resemble contenders when City won 1-0 at Wembley on October 29 to drop Tottenham to fifth, but Pochettino never grew down-hearted.
"We kept our way," Pochettino said. "I wasn't negative eight weeks ago and now I am not so positive. I try to keep a balance of my emotions.
"Of course we are so happy, but it hasn't surprised me because we were always focused on us, never on the opponent.
"We are happy because we are in a good position but it doesn't mean too much to be second, third or first now, the most important thing is where you finish.
"Of course now is the challenge to keep the level and try to increase because it is going to be tougher than before. We need to keep humble and work hard."
The scoreline was harsh on Bournemouth, who have now lost four away games in a row.
They created plenty of chances but failed to convert any while conceding regularly at the other end.
"It was a really strange game," said manager Eddie Howe, who has been suggested as a potential successor to Pochettino should the latter leave Spurs.
"The game turned on the first goal. We never really recovered from that but all through the match we had opportunities that we didn't take."
The Cherries' afternoon was made worse by a knee injury to defender Simon Francis, who was stretchered off just before half-time .
"We are very concerned that it could be serious," Howe said. "It is hugely disappointing for a player who has been magnificent for this club. We hope it is not as bad as it looks."

LONDON â€¢ Liverpool remain the only unbeaten team in the Premier League this season and 16 points ahead of tomorrow's visitors Manchester United but Jurgen Klopp knows better than most that form often goes out of the window against their fierce rivals.
Down the years, the biggest game in English football has always been a tempestuous affair, notably in 2015, when then captain Steven Gerrard was sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera just 38 seconds after coming on at half-time.
While referee Martin Atkinson will again be taking charge of the game and is sure to clamp down on any transgressions, Klopp wants his players to show aggression without going over the top.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, the German said: "We have to be angry on Sunday and we will be. We will fight for those points on Sunday."
The 51-year-old knows how heated rivalries can get, having been in charge of Borussia Dortmund for their "Der Klassiker" matches against Bayern Munich.
He added: "It's a big one! It is a very important game and it is very special.
"When I was back in Germany, I tried everything I could to watch it. Very often, it was very intense. Now I'm here, it's always tight.
"In Europe, we were good against them and I don't remember bad results too much."
His opposite number Jose Mourinho sought to gain a psychological edge ahead of his side's trip, noting that it was trophies in the cabinet that counted, not plaudits for playing style.
While Klopp has won widespread praise for his brand of "heavy metal football", he has yet to achieve silverware in his three years on Merseyside.
He has also yet to get the better of United under Mourinho, having not beaten them since the 55-year-old took charge in 2016, drawing three times and losing once.
The Portuguese made a sly dig at his pre-match press conference, saying: "Trophies matter, it matters, especially when you have the potential to fight for trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy.
"Jurgen told already they want to win the Premier League (title), (that) is their objective."
He also suggested that structural issues at Old Trafford were to blame for his United team being a long way from playing in his image.
But, while Mourinho claimed that United were far from "living in an amazing house" and will travel without the injured trio of Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez, Liverpool have problems of their own, too.
While their issues, unlike the Red Devils' deep-seated ones, are relatively short term, they will have a direct impact on Klopp's selection as Liverpool will be without three defenders, two of whom are usual starters.
Joel Matip joined Joe Gomez, already ruled out for six weeks with a fractured leg, on the sidelines after breaking his collarbone against Napoli in their Champions League win on Tuesday.
Klopp bemoaned the injury that Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered in the dying moments of that same match, calling it "not top-class news".
"It's our situation. Crisis is only a crisis if you feel it," he said.
"Trent is not as serious as the other two boys. It was unlucky as well, like with Joel."
While James Milner can fill in at right-back with Alexander-Arnold set to miss at least two games, Klopp hinted that forgotten man Nathaniel Clyne could be in line to make his first league appearance since May.

LONDON â€¢ Maurizio Sarri faces another angry vote of no confidence from frustrated Chelsea fans if he fails to spark his stuttering side in today's Premier League home clash with Brighton.
The Blues manager was subjected to vitriolic abuse and chants of "You don't know what you're doing" from the away supporters at Cardiff on Sunday in response to a listless display that was just six minutes away from becoming the nadir of a troubled debut season.
Although two late goals in the 2-1 win gave Sarri breathing space, keeping alive Chelsea's top-four hopes, it did little to quell the feeling that the under-fire Italian is on borrowed time at Stamford Bridge.
Reflecting the pattern of a term that has been one step forward, two steps back, Chelsea have been turgid of late in the league, showing little cutting edge despite posting high numbers in possession.
A repeat against relegation-threatened Brighton will certainly bring more opprobrium for Sarri, who has already suffered several nights of boos at home this term.
However, with seven matches left, defender Cesar Azpilicueta feels it is up to the players to "create a good atmosphere on the pitch".
He said: "We have to look at ourselves and, if we want to achieve our targets, we have to improve.
"On Wednesday, from the first minute, I know the fans will be behind us.
"We have to give them what they want - fighting spirit, great football, and scoring goals. That's what we both want and we have to pull in the same direction."
While Sarri has taken most of the flak, Gonzalo Higuain has also not escaped criticism over his lacklustre form, with just three goals in 11 appearances in all competitions since joining from AC Milan in January.
Such was Chelsea's confidence that the former Argentina striker would be able to flourish as the main man up front that Alvaro Morata was allowed to leave for Atletico Madrid on a loan deal.
But Sarri has since admitted Higuain, who has scored against only the bottom two clubs in the league, is struggling to "get used to this championship".
Pundit Craig Burley has, however, given short shrift to the maxim that it takes time to adapt to the physicality of English football.
The former Chelsea midfielder told ESPN: "He knows Higuain very well from Italy and he has had a good six months to suss out how football is played over here.
"By the way, it isn't chalk and cheese, it might be a little quicker, but it isn't that much different.
"He is just not playing well and he is in a team that is not playing well.
"If Chelsea do get in the top four or win the Europa League, then it is going to paper over the cracks of the deficiencies of this manager for the long term."

No game highlighted the new normal more than Wednesday's extraordinary Champions League quarter-final second leg between Manchester City and Tottenham, which ended 4-3 on the night and Spurs progressing 4-4 on away goals.

"I watched the action and the people from above decided it (City's disallowed goal) was offside," said the Spaniard. "In the moment, we celebrated and we were so close to the semi-finals. It is cruel, but it is what it is and we have to accept it.
The Spurs players, who moments before looked utterly distraught, revelled in the knowledge that they, and not City, were going through.
Son Heung-min, their match-winner in the first leg and the hero on the night after twice capitalising on poor giveaways by City defender Aymeric Laporte in the first half, declared their progression to a last-four clash with Ajax as "madness".
The South Korea forward, who now has 11 goals in 11 games with England striker Harry Kane absent, said: "I have never seen something like this, it was a very tough game, a very crazy game.

The crazy game started with a breathless 21 minutes, which went 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, before Kevin de Bruyne dished out his third assist to tee up Sergio Aguero to make it 4-2 just before the hour.
City thought they had reached only their second semi-final of Europe's elite competition, the first time since 2016 - only to be foiled by Fernando Llorente's "one of the best moments in my career".
The substitute's decisive goal 17 minutes from time was allowed to stand after a VAR review to check for a handball.
The Spain striker insisted Spurs could go all the way after reaching the European Cup semi-final for the first time since 1962.
He said: "To do this with an unbelievable team and be for the first time in the semi-finals of the Champions League with these teammates is crazy."
Despite the controversy over the ball brushing Llorente's arm before going in off his thigh, former Spurs great Glenn Hoddle said it was the correct decision. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand disagreed; he felt Spurs had made their own luck.
Even Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, one of the more vociferous critics of VAR, accepted that on this occasion, his side had benefited from the technology.
Declaring "that is why we love football", the Argentinian said: "It was unbelievable, the way it finished. My players are heroes to be here. I'm so happy for them, for the fans. Today, we showed great character and great personality."
His players now have the opportunity to write themselves into folklore, with the first leg against Ajax on April 30 at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they are unbeaten in three games.
The clubs' first clash in the competition also holds a special meaning for defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.
The May 8 reverse fixture marks the first time the Belgian pair will return to Amsterdam since leaving Ajax in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

It may have been a scrappy winner that settled this contest, but the gulf in class was huge.
To put Saturday's game into perspective, Bournemouth failed to register an attempt on goal of any description and never even managed to win a corner.
Eddie Howe's team had only 18 per cent of the possession and Guardiola's side were in so much control that it is seemed as though they had an extra man on the pitch for much of the match.
Hailing his "incredible" players, the Spaniard said: "One of the best performances we've ever played.
"We didn't concede one shot on target. Every time we lost the ball, we had three or four guys going to recover it. Bournemouth are incredibly well-organised, with 11 players in the box, so there's really no spaces, but we found them.
"I don't know what's going to happen at the end of the season, but these players deserve all my admiration and respect. Today was a special moment for all of us."
The only sour note for City was the sight of Kevin de Bruyne pulling up with a hamstring injury towards the end of the first half.
Telling BBC Sport the Belgian would be "out for a while", Guardiola felt that the injuries - Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte are already out for the next few weeks - could be down to the intensity he required his players to play with, but confirmed the withdrawal of John Stones was merely a precaution.
He said: "We demand a lot of the players without giving them the time to rest physiologically, that is why it is incredible. It's normal, we've played 25 games in 93 days."
The 48-year-old, however, insisted that the absences would give his squad players like Mahrez, who scored his first league goal in almost three months, the opportunity to stake their claim for a starting place.
Guardiola added: "His time is going to come because there are a lot of games. I don't have any doubts about his quality. He has to understand where he is, he is at a team who got 100 points and in every single game, fight, and run and play.
"The people in front (of him) are Leroy (Sane), who last season was one of the most important players we had, Bernardo (Silva), who is the best player in the league, and Raheem (Sterling)."
At Old Trafford, Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl both hailed the qualities of often-criticised Romelu Lukaku, whose brace enabled the home side to emerge with a 3-2 win.
Calling the Belgium striker, who ended his nine-match barren run in the previous league game against Crystal Palace, a "quality goalscorer", the Norwegian said: "We need to have him more in front of goal, but he has done fantastic in his work rate, attitude, he loves scoring goals, he smiles every day."
His opposite number agreed, bemoaning that the Saints were only "defeated by a fantastic Romelu Lukaku".

Not at his side's display at the Etihad on Saturday as the Premier League champions remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple, but rather at being beaten to the punch by Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong's signature.
The 21-year-old Dutch international, arguably the hottest midfield prospect around, agreed to join the Spanish champions from Ajax in the summer for a fee of â‚¬75 million (S$115.8 million) on Wednesday.
However, de Jong, who also turned down Paris Saint-Germain, had been in discussions with City regarding a potential move, telling Dutch broadcaster NOS over the weekend that he "spoke with Guardiola".
Having missed out on his services, the Spaniard felt the club had to be "quicker and smarter" in the transfer market if they were to land targets in the future.
Urging City's Abu Dhabi owners to try and sign players earlier in their careers so that they are more affordable, he said: "The transfer market, the salaries, increase a lot. After Neymar went to PSG (for â‚¬222 million), prices have increased to incredible levels.
"We have to adapt. It's difficult to buy top, top players at a good price.

"It's almost impossible. Maybe we have to trust in the young players (in the academy) and help them develop their own personality here.

"The players have to take their own decisions. When they don't want to come, it's because they want another place. There are other options, but we are going to try if we believe we need players in that position."
He was also adamant that having the correct pay structure was vital to maintaining team spirit.
The 48-year-old, who splashed out a club-record fee of Â£60 million (S$107.1 million) for Riyad Mahrez last summer, added: "We try to keep the harmony in the locker room with the wages. When you have no balance with that, then there is always a problem with the mood in the locker room.
"One of the good things that City have done is keeping that balance.
"The reality is that it's not just one or two teams paying a lot on wages. There are many and sometimes, we can't compete with that. At the end of the day, we want players who want to come here."

Lloris has endured fresh criticism after his fumble led to Toby Alderweireld's decisive own goal in the final minutes of Tottenham's 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
It is not the first time this term the Tottenham captain has made a mistake that ended up haunting his team.
But Spurs boss Pochettino has always backed the France World Cup winner, even in the wake of a drink-driving charge earlier in the campaign.
Pochettino confirmed Lloris would be in goal for Tottenham's first game in their new stadium against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
"He is my captain. He's one of the best keepers in the world. There's no doubt," Pochettino said.
"There's no doubt that Hugo is one of the best and he's going to be in the goal.
"It's a situation that is so painful because I think we deserved more (at Liverpool), but in that kind of situation, which happens in football, it's only to be strong and back our player.
"I think Hugo is going to be, like always, great for us. He was great for us.
"He was so important in all that process in five years, and for sure he's going to be one of the most important players for the future of the club too."
Tottenham's return home to their 62,062-seater stadium could not have come at a better time as they look for a morale boost after a wretched run.
They have taken just one point from their past five Premier League games, which has seen them not only drop out of the title race but also put their top-four place in serious peril.
There were signs of promise in the cruel loss to Liverpool and Pochettino is sure that their new home will be graced by Champions League football next term.

TOP-FOUR FIGHT

"Of course, the best stadium in the world must have the Champions League," he said.
"It would be a shame to not be in the next Champions League.
"But we are going to fight. We are in the top four, disappointed with the last result but of course it's not the same.
"Against Liverpool we deserved more, played really well second half, the feeling was so good. Playing like this I have no doubts we are going to be in the top four and playing in the Champions League next season.
"It's in our hands. It's a mini-league and playing five games in our new stadium will be a big boost for our players and fans. It's up to us to achieve that."
Tottenham, who have been playing at Wembley for the past two years, have had a painstaking wait following frustrating delays to the stadium's opening this season, which have postponed their moving-in date from August 2018.
But Pochettino is ready for a special day in the club's history.
"It's going to be very special, at last the new stadium is a reality," he said. "Now it's so close, just over 24 hours until we play in our new home.
"It's an exciting moment in the history of the club. Everyone will realise the magnitude of the project."

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the privilege of playing for Manchester United should be about the "survival of the fittest" as he deals with a mounting injury crisis.
Solskjaer had to make three first-half substitutions during Sunday's (Feb 24) 0-0 draw with Liverpool as Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all hobbled off injured.
The Norwegian could be without 10 players in total for Wednesday's trip to Crystal Palace and acknowledged that at least some of the muscle problems suffered by his squad may be a result of the rising physical demands he is placing on them.
United's running statistics have increased significantly since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in December.
That has been a factor in a huge upturn in results, with 14 matches under Solskjaer bringing 11 wins and just one defeat.
"It's probably linked, yes," said Solskjaer. "But when do you make that change? Do you wait until pre-season and think you will change results by just not asking them to run?
"Or do we start now and show them demands of intensity and how we want to play?"
The caretaker manager has made a point of getting United to play the fast-paced attacking game for which they were renowned during much of Alex Ferguson's 26Â½ years in charge at Old Trafford.
"You have seen what I have chosen," he added. "We need to play as a Manchester United team. If you want to be a part of Manchester United, it's a survival of the fittest isn't it?"
Solskjaer acknowledged that the physical demands of a hard-running style may take its toll on some of the more experienced members of his squad.
But he stressed the importance of professionalism off the pitch, saying his players could prolong their careers.

"They are getting older aren't they, Juan, Nemanja (Matic), Ander. So it's about the preparation, the standards that you have to live up to on and off the pitch as a Manchester United player, and as a professional player in the Premier League.
"It's not just turning up, playing and training and then going home and doing all these little out-of-football activities that we have all seen too many players doing.
"I'm pleased with the way my lads have responded in that way, that we don't see too much of them outside football.
"That was a big part of my career - as long as you are a footballer and you play in the Premier League, make the most of it because suddenly you get these injuries and you are done."
Solskjaer, meanwhile, is confident that Romelu Lukaku will get himself into the right shape to rediscover his best form.
The striker, who has gone 10 games without scoring, admitted in December that the muscle mass he put on to help Belgium finish third at last year's World Cup has hampered his form at club level.
"I can understand why, when you go to a World Cup and see the teams you play, the physicality might take over in terms of your preparation.
"We ask our forwards to work at a higher intensity, to run in behind, but that's what he likes, so I'm sure he'll be fine.
"Muscle is not so difficult to get rid of. He's lean, but he's muscly. We'll get him in the box and scoring us goals, that'll be his job."

The top-flight's basement club looked lost again as soon as captain Tommy Smith was given a 20th-minute red card and second-half goals from Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez sent them spinning to a 13th defeat in their last 14 league matches.
The St James' Park faithful also found a new hero to cheer as they eased their way clear of the relegation zone, offering a standing ovation to record signing Miguel Almiron after the Paraguayan made a striking full debut.
A fourth straight league loss for Huddersfield's new manager Jan Siewert left the Terriers stranded six points behind Fulham and 14 adrift of 17th-placed Cardiff City as Newcastle, with a third straight home win under Rafa Benitez, moved up to 14th.
Almiron, making his first start for Newcastle after his club record Â£20 million (S$35 million) move from Atlanta United, came off to rapturous cheers after tormenting Huddersfield's defence for 80 minutes.
The full debut of the Paraguayan was eagerly awaited by the home fans with the 25-year-old being their biggest signing since Michael Owen 14 years earlier.

"We needed to win and did it creating a lot of chances. We had 29 attempts which is not bad - their keeper did well. But it does not matter because we got the win."
Siewert recognised Smith's sending-off as the turning-point.

City want to co-own team in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR â€¢ The owners of Premier League champions Manchester City are eyeing a stake in a Malaysian team to add to their portfolio of clubs, a Malaysian sports official revealed yesterday.
Ferran Soriano, chief executive officer of the City Football Group (CFG), bankrolled by Sheikh Mansour of the Abu Dhabi royal family, raised the possibility when he met Sports Minister Syed Saddiq in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Ahmad Shapawi Ismai, the director-general of Malaysia's national sports council, revealed to Agence France-Presse that he was "delighted and excited" at the news that CFG "are looking at the possibility of co-owning a Malaysian club as we need (their) expertise".
While Soriano did not reveal the club that the group was interested in buying, Mr Syed said CFG would be meeting some presidents of local clubs soon, and he wanted them to make Malaysia "their base in South-east Asia".
At the meeting, the Spaniard claimed he saw great possibilities in the country, adding: "We see Malaysia has an opportunity for football... the level of enthusiasm of the fans is obvious. The development of Malaysian football and the league in the last year with investment by the government shows there's great opportunity."
Malaysia is the latest Asian country being considered by CFG - in March, Soriano expressed interest in investing in a club from India.

LONDON â€¢ On the finest of margins can matches, and even seasons, turn. Tottenham were labouring against their rivals, seemingly out of ideas against an Arsenal team that led through Aaron Ramsey and had executed manager Unai Emery's game plan to the letter.
Spurs were staring at a third consecutive Premier League defeat and the last time that happened was in 2012.
The implications were grave. Mauricio Pochettino had conceded that the title was out of reach for his team after the losses at Burnley and Chelsea. But another reverse would have imperilled their top-four hopes while simultaneously encouraging Arsenal's.
Then Christian Eriksen floated in a 73rd-minute free kick and everything changed.
Harry Kane was in an offside position but, contentiously, it was not spotted. If the Spurs striker had not been ahead of the line, perhaps Shkodran Mustafi would not have felt the need to barge him.
But he did and when the penalty was awarded, Kane duly scored his ninth goal in nine north London derbies and the match ended 1-1.

Tottenham's Harry Kane is now the outright leading scorer in Premier League north London derbies, overtaking Emmanuel Adebayor's eight.

"We'd had two disappointing results. It was a perfect game to get back and show the fans we're ready to fight for the rest of the season," the striker said after Spurs notched only their first draw of the season after 29 matches.
"It's a point, obviously we wanted three, but it stops the losing streak."
Spurs had their reprieve following their equaliser. Or did they?

There was still time for another twist with another controversial penalty awarded.
This time, it was for Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the substitute, had the position on Davinson Sanchez and there was some tussling but the Spurs defender did not appear to trip him.
Nonetheless, after going down, Aubameyang found himself standing over a last-gasp kick to win it and give Arsenal a sixth win in seven league games.
However, Hugo Lloris read his intentions and dived to save.
There was more.
When Alex Iwobi crossed from the rebound, Aubameyang looked set to convert from close range - only for Jan Vertonghen to make a last-ditch challenge.
At the very end, another Arsenal substitute, Lucas Torreira, was given a straight red card for a high and out-of-control lunge at Danny Rose.
When the dust settled and the points were shared, Spurs could reflect on having stopped the rot and Arsenal nursed feelings of what might have been.
"If we assess the game, I think we were better than Arsenal," Pochettino said.
"I think it was a fantastic atmosphere for us. I think that after two defeats, it was important today to build up our positive way."
Emery felt that Kane's penalty should not have been given.
"You prepare one match, thinking of the best performance but different situations can happen in 90 minutes," the Arsenal boss said.
"One month ago I said to everybody my opinion: VAR (video assistant referee) is coming to help the referees.
"It's very difficult for the referees. To analyse with the TV is very easy.
"VAR I think will help them, and maybe today's match would be different."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino says his players are "still in a dream" after reaching the Champions League semi-finals in dramatic fashion but expects his side to be ready for Saturday's crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City.
Spurs lost 4-3 in a classic encounter against City in Wednesday's quarter-final second leg, but went through on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
It was a gripping spectacle right until the final few minutes when City had a stoppage-time goal from Raheem Sterling, which would have sent them through, ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
"We are all tired after an amazing, crazy and unbelievable night," Pochettino told a news conference on Thursday (April 18).
"It means a lot (to reach the semi-finals). We still haven't realised because we are still in a dream. We're still in a bubble. We can feel the happiness of our fans, also through the messages of family and friends.
"But because we are so focused and busy preparing for Saturday, you do not allow yourself to live your reality. Our job is to be focused and concentrated and use all the tools to be ready for Saturday."
Spurs, currently third in the league, return to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday as they hope to boost their chances of finishing in the top-four for a fourth consecutive season.

"In 10 days to play three games... everybody thinks we know each other better now but there is not much time to train or prepare," Pochettino added.
"We need to assess some players, we need to assess some players that cannot be possible to play.
"That is the most important... to try to take the best decision and to provide the team with energy to be possible to fight and challenge for the three points."
In their first European Cup semi-final appearance since 1961-62, Tottenham will face Ajax Amsterdam, with the first leg scheduled in London at their new 62,000-capacity stadium on April 30.
"We need to be humble. No one expected us to beat City. It can give massive belief but if you are not clever enough to manage it, that victory can make you weaker," said Pochettino.
"It's so important to respect Ajax. Beating Real Madrid and Juventus means they are more favourites than us - that is a reality."

PARIS (AFP) - Rangers crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday (Dec 13) after falling 1-0 at Rapid Vienna, while crowd trouble sparked by Eintracht Frankfurt fans marred the German side's win at Lazio.
Steven Gerrard's Rangers, who had to win in Vienna in their final group game in order to qualify for the last 32, finish third in Group G, two points behind Rapid thanks to Dejan Ljubicic's 84th-minute winner, which sees the Austrians through to the knockout stages, level on 10 points with group winners Villarreal.
The Spaniards ensured top spot by beating bottom club Spartak Moscow 2-0 thanks to goals from Samuel Chukwueze and Karl Toko Ekambi.
Rangers came close to breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute of a match with few shots and little incident when Connor Goldson thudded a header against the bar, but Ljubicic rolled home the winner late on to seal Rangers' fate.
"We were good for 80 minutes and I couldn't ask the players to do anymore," said Gerrard.
"It is very hard for me to criticise the players for what they gave me tonight. The reality is at this level we fell a bit short."
Five Eintracht Frankfurt fans had been arrested in clashes with police in Rome ahead of their dead-rubber Group H match against Lazio as nearly 9,000 Germans swamped the Stadio Olimpico.
Eintracht had already comfortably taken top spot in the group thanks to winning all five of their previous games, while Lazio were also in the last 32 regardless of the result of the match, won 2-1 by the away side as they came back from a goal down thanks to second-half strikes from Mijat Gacinovic and Sebastien Haller.
However, German fans charged the pitch after Joaquin Correa's 56th-minute opener, and subsequently threw smoke bombs and flares at both Lazio fans and the police.
Last year's runners-up Marseille finished bottom of that group after losing 3-1 at home to Apollon Limassol and ending the group stage with just a single point.

GIROUD RESCUES POINT FOR CHELSEA

Chelsea, who had already won Group L, looked to be on their way to a perfect sixth win from six when Willian crashed home a free-kick on the half-hour mark at Vidi, but Ethan Ampadu's own goal just two minutes later gifted the hosts an equaliser.
Vidi then took the lead in the 56th minute after a blistering break, Georgi Milanov charging down the left and picking out Loic Nego, who brilliantly volleyed in the second.
However, substitute Olivier Giroud snatched a point for the Blues with a another free-kick, which the Frenchman curled off the underside of the bar to maintain his side's unbeaten group record.
"We made a lot of mistakes from the tactical point of view," said Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri.
"I am happy with the character and reaction from the second goal. From the tactical point of view we made a lot of mistakes."
